People pile in for the lunch rush inside Finch's Tea & Coffee House on West Pender

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit.

The Scout List is our carefully considered first rate list of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

Last Chance

If you get your ducks in a row real fast – like today – you can still place an order for 2009 JoieFarm wines to pick up in the city (save on those courier costs from Naramata). This is your opportunity to plan ahead. Think of how pleased you will be to have your secret stash of Joie when everyone else in the city bounces from store to store only to discover that the goods are sold out. Again. Principals Michael Dinn and Heidi Noble will be at The Storeroom (1396 Richards) on Saturday February 6th to personally hand over your order to you, but you have to order by today on their website.

Oh ya – the Swiss know how to start a party. Free cheese and chocolate at the House of Switzerland in Vancouver. And the fun doesn’t end there : many “surprise acts” are promised as well. Perhaps the legendary Pablo Picante will be bringing his yodeling skills?

First Nations / Second Nature

“The inaugural exhibition in the new Audain Project Gallery at SFU Woodward’s is First Nations / Second Nature, curated by Candice Hopkins. With its roots in the local history of Vancouver, First Nations / Second Nature is built of works which mediate the politics of site and the shifting conceptions of territory. The works, from local, national as well as international artists, together offer divergent engagements with the politics of site from the national to the local as it is defined by First Nations’ conceptions of place and territory. Artists include Rebecca Belmore, Matthew Buckingham, Greg Curnoe, Sam Durant, Jimmie Durham, Andrea Geyer, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Brian Jungen and Patricia Reed.

The Age of Pretence: Reflections on Post-Modernism

“We consider some of the trends of the post World War II period: for example, the decline in deference to authority; the casual approach to dress; in art and architecture, “the courage to challenge good taste”, the “dumbing down of society.” These and other trends are part and parcel of Post-Modernism. What is behind these trends? Is there any coherence to Post-Modernism?
