Simone Jarvis’ ‘Gardening’, Hanging Now At The Burrard Arts Foundation

IMG_5904-copy
Towards a Fictional History of Colour is the latest star-packed group exhibition to adorn the walls of the Burrard Arts Foundation. Curator Elliat Albrecht has brought together six Vancouver artists who are exploring the medium of paint; pouring, soaking, covering, washing, staining, inflating and negating. Needless to say, this exhibition has some cool works that deserve to be seen in person. Gracing the wall that leads to the bar room (or back room, or studio room, depending on the day you visit BAF) is Simone Jarvis’ painting, Gardening.

Simone explores the materiality of the relationship between oil paint and canvas, a relationship which has racked up all the golden, silver and platinum anniversaries with fresh breath. The colour palette is accentuated perfectly by a brilliant blue frame that becomes part of the painting, making for an object-like wall presence. Put this piece anywhere and wait for the compliments to roll in.
