by Ken Tsui | Since 2007, Record Store Day has been an international celebration of the independently owned record shop. Traditionally held on a Saturday in April, the day boasts live performances, good deals on records and the release of an impressive roster of rare vinyl pressed specifically for the celebratory day. On April 22nd, record shops all over town will throw open their doors to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Record Store Day and we’ve got a quick heads up on what you should be checking out:

Red Cat Records | 4331 Main St. & 2447 Hastings St. | DETAILS
With two stores, Red Cat is pulling double duty hosting two separate rosters of live shows at both stores. Depending on the kind of mood you’re in, you can catch Koban, Ashley Shadow, Skyote, The Pack A.D and Loscil up on Main St. or something a bit mellower with Lt. Frank Dickens, Hello Blue Roses (Dan Bejar’s side project) and Nick Krgovich at their Hasting’s shop. Check Red Cat’s website for updates on set times.

Beat Street Records | 439 W. Hastings St. | DETAILS
A great place to snag some of the rare hip-hop releases dropping April 22nd. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for RSD exclusives like UGK’s ‘Hard to Swallow’ on vinyl for the first time, rap legend J Dilla’s ‘Motor City’ featuring 20 never before released instrumental tracks and Slick Rick’s classic ‘The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick’ that ups the ante on a masterpiece with a collector’s 16-page children’s book!

Neptoon Records | 3561 Main St. | DETAILS
Neptoon Records will be hosting bands all day including The Evaporators (Nardwuar’s band), Dopey’s Robe, Sore Points, Peach Pit, Jay Arner, Douse and Hamm: One Man Band. Check Neptoon’s website for updates on set times.

Dandelion Records | 2442 Main St. | DETAILS
With a collection of killer no filler, Dandelion has a great balance of classics and deep cuts. Known for bringing in some pretty eclectic stuff, expect the Record Store Day offerings to celebrate the same spirit (everything from The Cure’s ‘Greatest Hits’ featuring two songs that don’t appear on any other vinyl release to classic obscurities like the classic Bollywood soundtrack for ‘Don’).

Audiopile | 2016 Commercial Dr. | DETAILS
If you’re looking just to do some low-profile crate digging, Audiopile will be putting vinyl (excluding Record Store Day releases) on sale with 20% off used records and 10% off new for one day only, along with plenty of exclusive RSD releases.

Zulu Records | 1972 W. 4th Ave. | DETAILS
Record Store Day wouldn’t be the same without one of the most storied shops in town. With a history of over 35 years, Zulu Records is home to dad rock. While you can expect sale prices and some exclusive classic rock releases like David Bowie’s previously unreleased live album ‘Cracked Actors’ to hit their shelves April 22nd, there will be a few live performances as the day winds down.

High Life Records | 1317 Commercial Dr. | DETAILS
These purveyors of world music and classic rock are celebrating Record Store Day with a big sale and sweetening the deal with a raffle, giveaways and “beverages”.
