We’re heading south this weekend for Frieze Art Fair’s second L.A. edition and we can’t wait to fill up on art…plus tacos, Korean food, sunshine, and lots more art.

Frieze will once again be held at Hollywood’s Paramount Picture Studios with over 70 galleries participating from the U.S. and around the world. Attracting international art collectors and enthusiasts, we can expect (and hope) that galleries at the fair (and around town) bring their A-game by showcasing the most forward-thinking contemporary art.

What I’m anticipating most is Frieze Programs, held in the movie-set backlot. It’s a curated section of special projects and commissioned installations from 16 artists. Additionally, there are talks and films (like the screening of Matthew Barney’s new film, Redoubt, 2019), an artist-driven street fair (think: L.A.-based, creative enterprises, non-profits, artist initiatives), and pop-ups from definitive L.A.’s eateries (hello, Sqirl!).

Other art fairs happening concurrently include:

Art Los Angeles Contemporary (ALAC), an international art fair with a strong focus on L.A. Now in its 11th year, the fair takes place for the first time at the historic Hollywood Athletic Club, which was founded in 1924 by Charlie Chaplin. The Fair will explore a new open format floor-plan featuring 45 galleries. Felix returns to the storied Hotel Roosevelt for its second year with 60 participating galleries (up from 41 last year) taking over the hotel’s rooms and poolside cabanas. Also returning for its second Los Angeles show is SPRING/BREAK with 45+ projects from artists, curators, and artist-run spaces, and a theme of IN EXCESS.

Other exhibitions at some of the big-name galleries that I’ll be sure to visit include Lucio Fontana Walking the Space: Spatial Environments, 1948-1968 at Hauser & Wirth, Richard Prince: New Portraits at Gagosian Gallery, and All of Them Witches at Jeffrey Deitch. While my plans might not include acquiring any art, I certainly look forward to discovering more of L.A. by way of its burgeoning art scene.
