Catch the Final Days of ‘Room of Her Own’ at Chinatown’s Yactac Gallery

This weekend is your chance to check out Setareh Yasan’s solo show at Yactac Gallery before it’s over. Titled ‘Room of Her Own’, the exhibition features works created specifically for Yactac’s new space in Chinatown.

The exhibition occupies a 9ft x 6ft studio, where the artist has created sculptures using faux fur, wood furniture, handmade and found objects that come together as vignettes in the life of a fictional character.

Vancouver-based Yasan has made nearly every component of her sculptures to create familiar yet unusable objects: a two-legged chair propped against the wall, a velvet slip dress caked thick with paint and plaster, a curtain top with no window to frame.

Navigating the tiny space – with works on the ground and on the walls, low and high – is part of the experience, and just finding the gallery is half the fun (up two sets of stairs, down a narrow corridor…just follow the signs), so go check this out in person! The show’s open for only three more days.

Gallery hours are January 26, 27 and 28 from 1-4pm. Entry is free and open to the public.

Yactac (Young Asian Canadian Twin Artists Collective) is a collective of four artists (two pairs of twins) who support artists through exhibitions, events, and performances and who promote the creation of art daily. Established over a decade ago, their exhibitions began at UBC, moved to a private home-turned-gallery in South Van, then found residency at Red Gate Arts Society until its closure last year. Truly an example of how independent arts spaces adapt out of necessity to exist in Vancouver.

Make an afternoon of it while you’re there and explore Chinatown. Grab a coffee at Propaganda; stroll through Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden; pick up a BBQ pork bun at New Town Bakery or a bratwurst and beer at Bestie.

Niwa Heads to Hazelmere Farm for a Mid-Summer Feast, July 25th

The crew at Niwa and Hazelmere Farm have been pals for years, so it was probably only a matter of time before somebody had the good sense to set up a table. On July 25, Chef Darren Gee cooks dinner at the source, with Naty King's fields helping decide what's on the menu.

A Neighbourhood-Wide Invitation to Wander Chinatown

When summer foot traffic slowed, a group of Chinatown businesses responded the way the best neighbourhoods often do: by working together. Their month-long Chinatown Passport is an invitation to wander, eat, drink and rediscover the neighbourhood.
