ZULU REPORT: All The Awesome Sounds That You Should Be Listening To This Week

by Nic Bragg | From Kitsilano’s Zulu Records, we once again present our weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, we provide The Track – the song that is on heavy rotation in the shop this week; The Playlist – which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig – the ‘must see’ show of the week; and The Glance – which details the best live acts that are on the immediate horizon. From our ears to yours, enjoy…

THE TRACK

TAME IMPALA Feels Like We Only Go Backwards

This neo-psych rock band from Perth Australia have consistently blown our speakers and our minds! Their recent Lonerism full-length must be strongly considered as a late year entry for best full blown rock album of 2012… but I guess Ty Segall has to something say on that matter. That said, Tame Impala are definitely ahead of their peers when it comes to riffing of the late 60’s freakout rock scene. Their songs have so much kinetic energy in them as they always seem to be flowing with nice textural melodies, fuzz box guitars, and finely woven layers of harmonies. Their reference points are familiar yet also divergent enough that the result has that infectious quality of being both alluring and clever enough to tempt the listener to unpack the influences of everything between The Beatles and Amon Duul. This catchy track highlights this pastiche while also presenting some nice hypnotic animation – Feels Like We Only Go Backwards is a real trip.

THE PLAYLIST

MUMFORD AND SONS Lover of the Light

Four dapper dressed lads from the UK… Sound familiar? Yes, Mumford and Sons are back in the public eye with another smash record Babel to promote. This is the lead of single and it hits its mark square on.
The Wales countryside and acting skills of Idris Elba steal the show!

KING KRULE Rock Bottom

Staying with UK talent, we now have a nice new video from London’s fresh faced jazz-dub chillwave buzzboy King Krule. We brought in his albums last year on strong recommendation from one of our core customers and indeed Krule’s stark style deserves a listen. Gritty England on display!

SCOTT WALKER Epizootics!

The promotional clip for Scott Walker’s new forthcoming album Bish Bosch shows him sharpening two swords in the studio. He records the piercing shrill and samples it as a rhythm – a slow pace to set is ‘horror-jazz’ murder ballads to. Yes, Scott is an artist and with each record he becomes more challenging. Dim the lights, this 10 minute journey is intense.

THE FOALS Inhaler

Having just wandered around Manchester on a Friday night, I can tell you that the UK party rock scene is alive and well. Whether this is a good thing or not is another matter. The Foals are the people’s champion.

MOONFACE Headed For The Door

Spencer Krug is Moonface! He used to be Sunset Rubdown and a member of Wolf Parade, and he used to live in Vancouver. Now he calls Helsinki home. This goregous black and white video captures his new face perfectly.

THE GIG

Saturday November 24th WALK THE MOON at the ELECTRIC OWL

This show is basicaly right on the verge of being sold out so we suggest you make up your mind about this group and grab a ticket quick. Cincinnati’s Walk the Moon are one of the young bands that exploded at this year’s SXSW music festival in Austin Tx. They are that special brand of infectious poppy music that has endeared them to a huge audience and made them an indemand quantity throughout both America and Europe. This video for Tightrope captures them at their playfull best!
