ZULU REPORT: All The Awesome Sounds That You Should Be Listening To This Week

by Nic Bragg | From Kitsilano’s Zulu Records, we once again present our weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, we provide The Track – the song that is on heavy rotation in the shop this week; The Playlist – which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig – the ‘must see’ show of the week; and The Glance – which details the best live acts that are on the immediate horizon. From our ears to yours, enjoy…

THE TRACK

TY SEGALL The Hill

Shucks guys…we just got in a few heavy boxes of Ty’s latest post-grunge platter Twins. We emptied the boxes and put the records on the shelf. People started calling us asking about it, as if suddenly we had a panacea that would cure all (yes, that is what a panacea is). “Umm hmm….we have the record on vinyl, yeah it is very loud, even by Ty’s standards”. Then we put the empty boxes in the lane to be recycled. The next day it rained and the jiffy pen writing the cool guys at Drag City put on the boxes bled everywhere making their message “This record will make you think twice about…” somewhat illegible. The Wolfman had the brilliant idea to bring the boxes back in the store, dry them out and hang them on the wall like ‘a piece of art’. Unfortunately during Vinyl Appreciation Night when we played Segall’s said ‘latest post-grunge platter’ Twins, someone defaced our piece of artwork. Fortunately, the culprit was actually one of the better known local photo-conceptualists, so there may yet be a ‘pot of gold at the end of the rainbow’.

THE PLAYLIST

SUN KILL MOON Mistress

I think it would be easy to find Mark Kozelk (Red House Painters, Sun Kill Moon) in a beautiful church or elegant garden. After searching these intimate spots, he strangely pops up on Jimmy Fallon’s stage of all places! The results are exquisite. You can catch him here in town at the Biltmore in February, too!

NEIL YOUNG AND CRAZY HORSE Ramada Inn

Neil and the Horse have a new record in the can called Psychedelic Pill. This is a 17 minute workout from their deadly jams in Neil’s barn. The tone is dialed right in to Neil’s classic Blackie axe into Fender champ signature sound. Maybe you can’t take psychedelics at work, but at least you can watch this.

JACK WHITE I’m Shaking

This makes me remember all those times Spy Vs. Spy would come on. Jack White faces off against himself declaring he’s ‘got fever’… he’s got us all shaking. Blunderbuss may just be Jack’s finest record ever. That said, I bet he’s got even better up the sleeves of those sweet suits.

ADELE Skyfall

Adele joins an elite company of singers who have paired their voices with the heroics of the UK’s number one espionage hero. I guess it’s only fitting that she would lend her talents to this over the top title track, she is UK’s number one diva hero, and like Bassey and McCartney before her, she can command anything of epic proportions.

CLOUD NOTHINGS Fall In

Attack on Memory was one of our staff faves from this year. We dig the blistering guitar and the sweet vocals – Cloud Nothings can do no wrong. Nice choreography on this video, guys!

CAPITOL 6 Playing Dead

One of Vancouver’s best bands get in their van and drive out to the woods for this cool video. Songs by the lake, a nice sleeping cabin…the perfect trip! Playing Dead is the lead off track on their great Pretty Lost LP – swing by the store for a listen!

NICK WATERHOUSE I Can Only Give You Everything

Here’s a tip: this guy is rocking out this week at the Biltmore. Check out the video. The song is a smart 60’s inspire crooner that should get you shaking in your seat.

MYSTERY MACHINE Ride

Here’s an awesome blast from the past! Yes! Mystery Machine have reformed and released a new record complete with a bash at the Astoria to celebrate.

THE GIG

BOWERBIRDS In Our Talons MONDAY OCT 29th AT BILTMORE CABARET

Three cheers for our pal Phil who runs Dead Oceans records. He has quietly put out some of the best records of the last 15 years and as a result has watched his roster overrunneth with creativity a la Tallest Man on Earth, Sharon Van Etten, Frog Eyes, Califone, and more! Buried in this mix is a band that has always managed to delight with their backwoods Appalachian charms. Yes, I am speaking on none other than Raleigh NC’s Bowerbirds, who capture the ghostly sound people in marketing called ‘freak-folk’ while us hippies at the store dropped the freak and spoke of folk-rock. This night at the Biltmore promises to be a nice intimate night hosted by Beth Tacular and Phil Moore – the two principle members of this outstanding outfit. If you see them in the parking lot before hand, ask them if they are still living in an Airstream trailer in the south.
