Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

TWIN SISTER – “Bad Street” – In Heaven (Domino)

A little sexier on their first proper full length, Twin Sister steps out from the blogosphere to deliver this baby for Domino. Feels like ages ago I first heard “I Want A House” as a year-end list for Montreal blog Said The Gramophone. The Brooklyn 5-piece has come along way. Wispy vocals and interlocking synth lines, but somehow not overly dancey or obnoxious. It’s smooth indie rock. I keep writing things and realizing that they read bad in print, but somehow they don’t bug me on the record. I like this band.

The Playlist

BLITZEN TRAPPER American Goldwing (Sub Pop)

One of the most underrated beard-rock bands of the 2000’s, BT is apparently still going strong. Whodathunk?

COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES Giving (Hometapes)

You know these guys from the Volcano Choir project (a collabo between CoCoBees & Bon Iver) — they’re an awesome band in their own right. Gorgeous, driving post-rock from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

DIRTY BEACHES Badlands (Zoo Music)

First time I saw this guy was in New York City to a crowd of no one, opening for Makeout Videotape. I was absolutely floored. One of the best solo performers I have ever seen and his recordings capture the spirit brilliantly. Layers of guitar loops and samples haunt us while Alex Hungtai’s vocals croon distantly in the back of the mix. Think Elvis + Suicide.

AA BONDY Believers (Fat Possum)

Mr AAB is a perfect fit for Fat Possum. Sorta alt-country, really pretty, singer-songwriter based music. Good for driving at night thinking about your ex-sweetheart music.

DUM DUM GIRLS Only In Dreams (Sub Pop)

This band has far exceeded my expectations for a career arc. While many of their contemporaries got lost in the mud of Vivian Girls garage explosion, the dummys have crafted a beautiful follow-up to their rad first LP. Excited to see these ass-kickin’, gun-totin’, sucker-makin’ women at the Owl next month!

WILCO The Whole Love (Anti-)

Wilco has settled into a nice groove of solid album after solid album after solid album. I’m cool with that. Here’s another one.

The Gig

Tuesday SEPTEMBER 27 – Weedeater @ Rickshaw

Dudes. This band is absolutely insane. This is probably my highest recommendation for a show since I took over the Zulu Report a few months ago. Heavier-‘n-Hell stoner metal three-piece from North Carolina. I sing the highest praises even to those not in the choir—I don’t care if you don’t like metal; give this band a shot and try to have fun. Fake it ‘til you make it. Every time I’ve seen these guys, lead singer Dixie Dave Collins pukes on stage. It’s fairly remarkable. He also shot his toe off with his favourite shotgun a couple years ago, so…
