Food Media Omnibus #527: Habit Lounge, Mis Trucos, And More…
September 26, 2009
In the Globe & Mail, Alexandra Gill is only marginally impressed with Davie’s new Mis Trucos, a restaurant that falls short of being “a proper Spanish tapas bar”.
In the Westender, I shake my own drink and sup satisfied at the recently reborn Habit Lounge on Main.
In the Vancouver Sun, Mia Stainsby scarfs happily at a Manchurian hole-in-the-wall and waxes impressed on the new Dirty Apron cooking school while Simon Sobolewski and Kunal Ghose of Victoria’s Red Fish, Blue Fish get props for producing half a bag of garbage a day (instead of a dumpster full).
In the Vancouver Courier, Tim Pawsey drinks Yalumba at Joe Fortes.
In the Georgia Straight, Judith Lane et al identify four neighbourhood restaurants that have stood the test of time (Accord Seafood, Lombardo’s, Kibune Sushi, Cafe Luxy), and Jurgen Gothe lists his picks for the best places to really lean into fermented grape juice (he neglects to mention the grassy, shaded patch on the southbound on-ramp to the Granville St. bridge). We are also quietly reminded of how bad an idea it is for the Parks Board to get into the restaurant business after it has proved beyond a reasonable doubt that it is not capable of doing so.
Whistler’s Pique reports on the coming of Araxi’s new cookbook.
As mentioned elsewhere on Scout, a food scribe from the New York Times recently paid Vancouver a visit in search of accidental Asian influences (psst, we have plenty).
In the North Shore News, Deana Lancaster enjoys brunch at West Vancouver’s Crave Beachside.
Finally, a presumably very young and obviously self-satisfied little fellow named Knox Harrington of Calgary’s arch-conservative-libertarian and extra ridiculous Western Standard visits Tofino and hopefully will never be back. His opening paragraph:
Having been to Vancouver Island a number of times and never being terribly thrilled with what it had to offer, I was less than enthusiastic when a trip to Tofino, B.C. was put before me. I pictured laid-back West Coast lefties, a disdain for capitalism and vegan dishes abounding. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Well, about the food at least. The hippies were there – soaked in patuli oil, playing with devil sticks and the filthy kind of dreadlocks that only true neglect can bring.
The name “Knox Harrington” (one hopes) is a nom du plume homage to this memorable character from The Big Lebowski. Poor dear.
