Campagnolo & DB Bistro Named On Condé Nast’s 2009 “Hot List”

hot-listCondé Nast Traveller’s much anticipated 2009 Hot List Tables is out. The annual nods to the world’s hottest new restaurants is a sought after cap feather, especially here in Canada, where usually fewer than 10 properties are singled out for mention. This year it was only five.

Toronto had two (Nota Bene, Harbord Room); Montreal, one (Restaurant DNA); and Vancouver, two.

I was flattered to be asked to do the picking and the micro-write-ups for our city back in January, and settled on DB Bistro Moderne and Campagnolo. It was sort of a no brainer.

While I’d have liked to have added Market, La Quercia, and Au Petit Chauvignol (which wasn’t even open yet) to the list, I could only choose two.

Just to invite dissent: given the lay of the restaurant landscape back then, would you have chosen differently?

  1. Campagnolo is the iffy one. Have not been because I can’t get a table and don’t want to stand in a hallway while waiting. If you are a tourist and go to that part of town and are turned away… probably will piss people off. Take reservations damn it. I know I’ve said this before, sorry.

    We liked DB, service good, room was fine (a little over lit) but overpriced.

    Chambar and C for me.

  2. Chambar and C wouldn’t really satisfy the “new” part of the equation, as good as they are.

    I haven’t been to Market, but I can’t really argue with DB and Campagnolo

  3. Campagnolo does not take reservations and so far the only time we have had a line-up in our hallway is between about 730-800 on a Friday and Saturday night. At any other time, or on any other days of the week we have been able to seat our guests immediately. I have worked at a few different restaurants over the last 20 years and 730-800 has always been the most requested timeslot. If you are ever planning on coming down during that period on a Friday or Saturday, please just call and ask if there is a line-up, any other time, just come on down.

  4. Hard to pick just two and I think Camagnolo gets the nod because it is “cooler” than La Quercia and the chef’s name brings more attention. Personally I have preferred my meals at LQ but as for ‘buzz worthy’ Camp probably takes the spot. Good for me, as less tourists filling up the places I like to go.

  5. Also thank god you didn’t pick Market as I just read over the list and it got on the hot list in….Mexico.

  6. I like the food at Campagnolo, I’m not sure how Conde Nast found out about this cool spot next to the Ivanhoe, but I’m glad they are not just following the “big” names out there. I have ventured to the restaurant avoiding the herd( I try not to dine between 7 and 8:30) and have always had a friendly and enjoyable experience, I have never been left waiting in the hallway. I guess if you strive to avoid experiences because you expect to get pissed off, you can’t be disappointed, however you can come off as a bit of a ponce.
