Zulu Report: Wigging Out To Hudson Mohawke And Ladytron

IMG_7905

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

FUCK BUTTONS | Surf Solar from Tarot Sport (out now on ATP Records)

The album version of this dreamy blast of lo-fi electronica runs out at over 10 minutes and really captures the adventurous experimentalism that U.K. duo Fuck Buttons aspire to. Combining high-tech beat programming with organic instruments that include circuit bent toys, thrift store keyboards, efx, and a seriously beat-up floor tom, these guys have a definite balls-out aesthetic as they stitch together their tapestry of sonic loops into an increasingly denser more aggressive form of dance music. Woven into this distorted agro mix is their love for such diverse influences as epic post-rockers Godspeed You Black Emperor as well as ambient rock godfathers My Bloody Valentine, thus resulting in a hybridized listen that should appeal to all ears. Whether you dig the classic Andy Weatherall dancefloor bounce, the skewed abstraction of Aphex Twin or the visceral beastly bombast of Mogwai, Fuck Buttons are ready to rumble… low-end bass shaking rumble that is. The Playlist

WOLFMOTHER Cosmic Egg (Universal)
My body can’t do the Cosmic Egg – but my mind can especially when tuned to Wolfmother’s heavy Sabbath wavelength.

THE POINTED STICKS Three Lefts Make a Right (Northern Electric)
Having reunited in 2006, this legendary seminal Vancouver pop-punk return with some sharp-ended new recordings.

DANIEL JOHNSTON Is And Always Was (Eternal Yip)
Produced by pop genius Jason Falkner this fully flushes out Daniel Johnston’s unique songwriting craft.

THEE OH SEES – Dog Poison (Captured Tracks)
This generation’s 13th Floor Elevators? Maybe!?! They do have the swampy guitar trash sound down.

HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS Devil Do (Transdreamer)
Dark Americana from everyone’s favourite Headcoatee Holly! Why is it a gal from the UK can capture this better than a host of other bloodshot players?

OOIOO Armonico Hewa (Thrill Jockey)
Boredom’s drummer Yoshimi P-We returns with an awesome set of tribal psychedelia tunes that takes the spirit to new heights.

WEEZER Raditude (Universal)
Music for grown adults riding BMXs through the L.A. aqueducts… Weezer deliver the pop dream again.

LADYTRON Live at London Astoria ((Ladytron Recordings)
Combining the best of Kraftwerk and Joy Division, Ladytron’s sound is dialed in. A live album really hammers the point home.

HUDSON MOHAWKE Butter (Warp Records)
Trust Warp to find us some smooth funky blissed out Sesame Street rock to groove to as we put on our neon socks.

LIGHTNING BOLT Earthly Delights (Load Records)
Relentlessly loud lo-fi black metal punk designed to wreck small speakers in your Passat.

The Gig

HIDDEN CAMERAS | Wednesday November 25th at The Biltmore

Fronted by the debonair Joel Gibb, Toronto’s ten piece chamber pop collective know how to put on an amazing live show. Gibb once described his unique sonic vision as “gay church folk music” and certainly on stage there is a bit of a ‘join the congregation’ feel as his performances are more like ornate spectacles featuring costume clad go-go dancers, elaborate sets, and his signature epic songs. Loaded with sexual politics, Gibb’s clever lyrical sense and amazingly smooth voice is the real centerpiece of a Hidden Camera’s show, as with skillful subversive panache the group manages to host a giddy coming out party for all into orchestrated hedonism. Set the TiVo to tape Glee and get out to where the real scene is happening. Official website here.
