Veteran newsman Walter Cronkite has died at the age of 92 (pick a eulogy, there are so many going around – CNN, CBS, The New York Times).

His live reporting of the 1969 moon landings was the high water mark of television, and I think we all view every NASA launch through the prism of that oft-replayed clip when the Eagle landed and Neil Armstrong went for a lunar stroll (watch after the jump). Those who know it suffer the likes of Wolf Blitzer poorly.

And here he has passed on the Apollo 11 mission’s 40th anniversary, while the space craft was actually in flight somewhere between the earth and the moon. If there was a moon tonight, I’d give him a howl.
