About the Museum of Vancouver

Vancouver’s story begins here.

The Museum of Vancouver (MOV) connects Vancouverites to each other and connects the city to the world. The museum was founded in 1894 and went through a number of iterations before being rebranded as the Museum of Vancouver in 2009. It creates Vancouver-focused exhibitions and programs that encourage conversations about what was, is, and can be Vancouver.

An enthusiastic civic advocate, MOV is dedicated to encouraging a deeper understanding of Vancouver through stories, objects and shared experiences. MOV is an independent, non-profit organization that seeks partners to support the evolution of the Museum’s visitor experience. Our vision is to inspire a socially connected, civically engaged city.

Throughout the year, MOV provides various talks, tours, panel discussions, round table debates, workshops, film screenings and presentations that provide education and entertainment to the public.

Current feature exhibitions include: All We Want is More: The Tobias Wong Project, A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia, The Unity Indigenous Plant Garden: A Living Exhibition, That Which Sustains Us, Cesnam – The City Before the City, and the Permanent History Galleries.

We acknowledge the Museum of Vancouver is located on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, at the site of the ancestral Village of Senakw – neighbouring the current Squamish reserve of the same name.
