FEAST | Loula’s Taverna Head Chef Mike Livingstone and La Mezcaleria’s Kevin Orozco are joining forces for a one-night-only Fall Collaboration Dinner celebrating the crossover between Greek and Mexican cuisines. The four-course family-style menu includes dishes like Dolmates Greek Tamales, Dry Green Pozole Tostadas, and slow-cooked Lamb Barbacoa — each one a reflection of the chefs’ shared love of regional traditions and bold, seasonal flavours. The evening wraps with an after-party in Loula’s speakeasy back bar. Limited seats are still available for $58 per person, including a complimentary cocktail. DETAILS
GOOD THINGS | Also happening tonight, Samin Nosrat takes the stage at the Chan Centre to talk through her new book, Good Things — the ideas that shaped it, how recipes were developed and chosen, and the small rituals shared with friends. Expect a thoughtful and funny conversation about cooking as craft, care and community, with plenty of takeaways for your own table. Tickets are still available. DETAILS
GOOD VIBES | The Good Vibes Market returns to R&B Brewing this Saturday for an afternoon built around its motto, “Good people making good stuff to share with other good folks.” In addition to a healthy amount of beer, expect an easygoing mix of jewellery, clothing, and art, from local makers including Zaleska Jewelry, Three Raccoons Studio, Charlotte Strudel, lil so&so handmades, Stab It Pretty, Connally Goods, Kcaboodle, Loud Leopard Store, and the Official Good Vibes Booksellers. DETAILS
GOOD PRICES | Happy Hour is back at Thank You Pizza, and it’s a good one. Every Wednesday and Thursday from 5–6pm, all pizzas are half price and glasses of wine are just $12. There’s a four-pizza limit on takeout (so don’t get any smart ideas), but even two pies at half price feels like a win. Expect good tunes, chilled wine, and one of the most effortlessly cool sidewalk patios in the city. DETAILS
FILM | Show some love for the little guys – and the planet! – by joining the sixth annual Small File Media Festival, an aware-ness raising film fest dedicated to reducing the film industry’s environmental footprint, happening at The Cinematheque this Friday and Saturday. The SFMF is spread over three programs, beginning on Friday evening at 7pm with a screening of over 30 shorts (adding up to about two hours of screen time), followed by a cocktail reception. It continues the following day with a new program of shorts to catch in the morning (11am), and wrapping up with a 2pm matinee screening. Expect risk-taking, politically-charged and artsy films from Canada and around the world (Bangladesh, Egypt, Mexico, and Iran) riffing on the concept “Small Files for a Small World”. DETAILS
ART | The window to see Predictions at the Polygon Gallery is narrowing quickly! This exhibit is the third series of collages by Dakar-born, Winnipeg-based artist Anna Binta Diallo, in her ongoing project exploring the “complex interconnections between human activity and the natural world” that ultimately poses the following line of questioning: “What was projected into the future by past peoples? What has come true? What hasn’t? What could?” Extensively researched, and featuring nods to “geology, earth science, mapping, weather events, and topography”, the focus here is on scientific and alternative forecasts – and Diallo’s own predictions for the future. “Through layering flora, fauna, human connection to land, and the cosmos, Diallo imagines speculative paths that our ecological and cultural landscapes might follow, and the unexpected constellations of meaning that can guide us through uncertain times.” DETAILS
APPLES | One of the sure signs that Fall is officially in full swing is the annual UBC Apple Festival – and it’s happening this weekend. Get into the spirit by joining the throngs of happy, apple-loving Vancouverites at the UBC Botanical Gardens. This year’s Apple Market is set to feature over 50 apple varieties — both conventional and organic (plus a sneaky selection of pears!). Not only will there be apples galore, though, you can also expect apple pie, hot apple cider, caramel apples, apple chips, and organic BC apple juice. And, for those of you who have trees at home, Master Gardeners will be available to discuss apple tree related gardening issues and pest management. This is not a light traffic event, so get planning! DETAILS
CERAMICS | We always get excited when Itsumo Life, the impossibly stylish and always lovely Mount Pleasant lifestyle store holds an event at their adjoining “Enishi” event space. With that in mind, this weekend they are laying out a week-long show of large stoneware vessels by BC potter Martin Peters, drawing on the quiet power of Korean onggi forms. Made in his Dunbar studio, Peters’ creations emphasize scale and utility — think broad shoulders, clean profiles, and restrained surfaces that nod to onggi’s role in storage and fermentation. The opening reception goes down on Friday, October 17th from 7-9pm (RSVP to [email protected] to attend); but the show is also viewable from 11am–6pm daily until the following Friday, October 24th. OPEN | Chef Tushar Tondvalkar’s much-anticipated restaurant, Kavita, opens this week. Named after his late mother, it bridges the roots of Indian cooking with the raw ingredients of British Columbia. Expect precise, expressive dishes like Chicken Bhujing under crisp flattened rice; Malvani Prawn; and (my favourite) Tesfa Farms buffalo milk Paneer and Saag made with foraged nettles. Cocktails and wines promise equal care and balance. This restaurant is new and hot, so if you are hoping to snag a seat (particularly if you have your sights set on the chefs table) then get on that reservation button sooner rather than later. Extra bonus: there will be a Happy Hour (3:30-5pm)! DETAILS
NOURISH | Farmers’ Markets are on the wane, so consider this your heads-up to take full advantage of the harvest season and the fact that these markets are here for you right now (there’s only two more weekends to go before the season is over). They say “you never know what you’ve got until it’s gone”… All kinds of apples are happening right now; plus healthy kale, grounding squash, and pleasantly bitter radicchio. Also cheeses, artisan breads, preserves, honey, wild salmon, cookies, and pies. Support the people who grow and make our food! Find out more.
