From our calendar to yours comes this carefully considered agenda of cool things we are doing, wishing we could do, or conspiring to do in Vancouver from Thursday, May 8th to Wednesday, May 14th, 2025. Please note that you can now get the Scout List – with a few extra pieces of intel included – sent to your inbox every Thursday. Sign up for your subscription here.
MAGNET | BC brewery compatriots Superflux Beer Co. and Coast Mountain Brewing have combined forces to whip up a special collaboration brew, “Double Vision” Hazy IPA, and a keg of the stuff has been handed off to The Magnet in Gastown. And, because the folks at The Magnet are so rad, they’re offering a glass of the stuff on the house to anyone who swings by the restaurant today (Thursday, May 8th; thanks, guys!) – but only until 6pm (or until the keg runs dry)! So you’d better get a move on! Also of note: In addition to the collab IPA, there will be several other special beers from Superflux and Coast Mountain newly added to the beer list for you to try. So plan on showing up early and sticking around for a while! DETAILS.
YEEHAW | Thumn’s Dinner Club is celebrating their one-year anniversary with a special throwback dinner theme: ‘The Cowboy Feast’ will be bringing serious Wild West-inspired cookout vibes to Kitsilano Neighbourhood House next Wednesday (May 14th), with Chef Jacob Jicinsky (Tableau Bar Bistro; formerly Homer St. Cafe) joining Chef Thumn in the kitchen. Time to don your best approximation of a Western look (you have a week to throw something together, so no excuses for half-assing it!) and dig into some biscuits and brisket (maybe) and/or the like, with other fun-and food-loving people. Roll solo or rustle up a group to join in on the action. Seriously, how can this not be a good time? Tickets are $80 per person (with some flex room, upon request) including all of your grub and non-alcoholic beverage pairings. Let’s get rebellious on a Wednesday! DETAILS.
ART | The annual graduate degree exhibition at Emily Carr University, The Show, returns now through May 21st, with over 420 works by graduating artists, designers, and media makers spread across two levels of campus. Expect bold, diverse, and innovative projects reflecting the depth and breadth of student practice in 2025. Whether you’re catching the opening week buzz or dropping by later with a coffee in-hand, this is a rare chance to see so much emerging talent in one place. DETAILS.
DUMPED | The breakup art show Dumped returns to August Studios for two days of catharsis, chaos, and anonymously submitted post-heartbreak artefacts. Think unsent letters, savage screenshots, and deeply personal debris from the emotional wreckage. The Friday night opener (May 9th, 8pm–late) includes drinks (sounds like a good call), iconic breakup tracks, and cake, while Saturday (May 10th, 12–7pm) features flash tattoos by local artists (we shouldn’t need to add the disclaimer that your partner’s name is probably not the right move here). DETAILS.
SCORE | Knifewear’s Spring Garage Sale kicks off Monday, May 12th, offering rare finds and sharp deals on handcrafted Japanese knives. Expect one-of-a-kind blades, retired samples, blacksmith prototypes, and new lines brought back from Japan by the Knifewear crew. The sale runs all week long (the first day is usually the busiest) – perfect for pros, collectors, and anyone looking to upgrade their kitchen game. Whether you’re buying your first blade or hunting for something truly unique, this is the week to do it. Free to browse – but don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ll make it out “just looking”. You’ll likely fall in love with something. DETAILS.
SKATE | Late Bloomers Skate Club and Club Soda Events are teaming up for a laid-back, all-ages skate meet at Strathcona Skate Park on Saturday, May 10th. Drop by between 2–5pm for an afternoon of beginner-friendly skating, community hangs, and good, alcohol-free drinks. Boards and helmets will be available; DM @latebloomersskateclub ahead of time if you’d like to borrow gear. DETAILS.
MOTHER’S DAY | It’s Mothers Day on Sunday! (You can never have too many reminders, right?) Take your mom out for brunch (Dachi has a nice-looking spread planned); and for goodness’ sake, pick up some flowers! DETAILS.
NOURISH | The sun is expected to come out on Saturday (finally!), which will make it easier to slide out of bed a little early and head to the Vancouver Farmers Markets at Trout Lake (Saturday, 9am-2pm), Riley Park (Saturday, 10am-2pm), the West End (Saturday, 9am-2pm) or Mount Pleasant (Sunday, 10am-2pm) before the farmers sell out of their produce. Score goodies like local salad greens, stinging nettles, fresh vegetables and herbs – heck, maybe even some fiddleheads! There will also be artisan breads, preserves, honey, wild salmon, cookies, pies, and flowers, plus even a food truck or two, to keep you busy. DETAILS.
TOP DROP | Top Drop Vancouver — Vancouver’s coolest and most beloved low-key wine event — returns from May 12–13th, bringing together 50+ small-scale, terroir-focused wineries from around the world for two days of sipping, talking (and maybe a little dancing?). Whether you’re trade, trade-adjacent, or just an enthusiastic wine lover, this year’s Top Drop is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic editions yet, with a renewed focus on sustainability, authenticity, and keeping it all refreshingly unpretentious. “The Main Event” ($135) takes place Tuesday night at The Roundhouse, with winemakers pouring and chatting directly with guests. The night before, a quartet of themed wine parties take over Yaletown (think wood-fired pizza, arancini, sake snacks, and speakeasy pours). Check out the full line-up here. DETAILS.
DESIGN | The West Vancouver Art Museum’s latest exhibition, Patkau Architects: Matter Made Material, delves into how architecture takes shape through light, material, and place. Beginning next week on Wednesday, May 14th, the show highlights the acclaimed Patkau approach to building with presence, where wood, steel and concrete aren’t just structural, but responsive, interacting with natural light to create a sensory experience. The public opening reception takes place Tuesday, May 13th from 6–8pm. Bonus: As part of the exhibition, Architect John Patkau joins curator Pantea Haghighi for a conversation on Friday, May 16th from 7–8:30pm at the West Vancouver Memorial Library. The talk is free, but registration is required and you know this will fill up fast! Can’t make it to either the opening or the talk? You can still drop in to check out the exhibition through to Saturday, July 19th. DETAILS.
