On The Scout Ipod: The Best Tiny Venue “Live” Acoustic Gig, Ever

Michelle tuned me into this late in 2008, and I think I may have posted it on Scout before, perhaps in the Daily Viral. Nevertheless, it was the song of our recent Outstanding Road Trip, and I can’t get it out of my head. “It” is Bon Iver performing Skinny Love in front of twenty people with candles and wine inside a small Montemartre apartment in Paris. I really hope you find it as pretty dang electrifying as I do. The film was shot by Vincent Moon of France’s conceptually awesome website, La Blogotheque:

Every week, we invite an artist or a band to play in the streets, in a bar, a park, or even in a flat or in an elevator, and we film the whole session. Of course, what makes the beauty of it is all the little incidents, hesitations, and crazy stuff happening unexpectingly. Besides, we do not edit the videos so they look perfectly flawless, instead we keep the raw sound of the surroundings. Our goal is to try and capture instants, film the music just like it happens, without preparation, without tricks. Spontaneity is the keyword.

This one track came at the tail end of a lengthy live performance. Here’s the relevant translation from the original vernacular:

To give you a more precise recap of the evening, we should have let a camera film the declining day, the ceiling light we switched off, the candles we put on the floor. When Sean and Mike left their chairs to let Justin sing “Skinny Love”, it was night-black. Afterwards, there were hugs, sushi, and some joints. Then we went down in the street. Liz Green was there; we sang in front of a carousel, on sidewalks, in the middle of the road, and then in a bar, where we got drinks. We can’t show you everything, though. We have to keep some things to ourselves, just next to the conviction that we’re going to organize other parties like this one. Thank you, Bon Iver. And thanks to those who were there.

Le sigh. I wish to hell I was.
