Tea & Two Slices is a long-running local news round-up by NEEDS frontman and veteran dishwasher Sean Orr, who lives and works in Gastown, deeply aware of his privilege.
The dystopia will be “Not-Owner-Occupied”: Not-owner-occupied property skyrockets in Vancouver. This should obliterate any and all YIMBY arguments about supply, but they’re like terrible flat-earthers who – when presented cold hard data – instantly put on their dollar tinted sunglasses and blurt out something about “incentives to developers” and plant their dumb ostrich heads back into the sand.
“What used to be a smouldering cigarette butt on the side of the road is now arguably a raging forest fire,” he said. Andy Yan is Vancouver’s housing Nostradamus and we should build him a statue and put it in the Rennie Collection and whoever came up with the idea to turn housing into “investment vehicles” should be forced to do a Cersei Lannister-style walk of atonement down Commercial Drive.
Consult the magic 8 ball: Will any mayor of Vancouver ever solve homelessness? The Federal Liberals got us into this mess under Chretien and Trudeau is doing nothing to clean it up. I can’t wait for him to win the next election by leveraging the fear of a Scheer government against us. Can neoliberalism just die already?
Build first, ask questions later: B.C. city sued for giving OK to building that has no architect. This is a great metaphor for the housing bubble.
Do something about it: Housing Emergency: Vancouver People’s Summit.
Also: We Exist Tent City Founding Declaration.
“We Exist Tent City is taking unused City-owned land to protect ourselves against the hostility of the government, bylaw and RCMP officers, vigilantes in the public, and the dangers – the cold, isolation, overdose, and bear-attack – of living scattered, alone, and invisible in the bush.”
Sports: U.S. authorities push ahead with battery charge on Raptors president Masai Ujiri following Game 6. Dock Currie:
It is frankly incredible and shameful that Oracle Arena and the Golden State Warriors organization allowed this to occur. A sheriff’s deputy shouldn’t have been anywhere near, let alone harassing Masai Ujiri, president of a visiting team. If I were the Warriors organization I’d revisit my arrangement with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and tell them that if they embarrass them on the world stage like this, they’re not welcome at the Arena.
Still think cops belong at Pride? “Here are some Nazis from the Soldiers of Odin being protected at the anti-SOGI protest by the VPD.”
Vancouver’s shame: TERF writer loses lawsuit against Twitter, will remain banned. Good riddance, you vile, vitriol-spewing hate machine.
