Canuck grinder Raffi Torres has been suspended for four games after his Tuesday night hit on Edmonton Oiler Jordan Eberle (who wasn’t injured on the play). That means we won’t be without Torres’ services tonight against Minnesota or in the final game of the regular season against Calgary this Saturday, plus the first two games of the playoffs. I get where the league is going with the whole head-shot thing, but this looked to me like a crystal clean smack. Eberle put his head down at the last second while reaching for the puck, and Torres followed through with his body (not his elbow), just as he is supposed to. Personally, I don’t even think the ref should have called a penalty. As Torres put it after the game, “I have to finish my hit or I’m out of a job”. Sounds about right. The NHL doth protest too much, methinks. What about you?
I would agree that it was a pretty clean hit compared to others that get mentioned but it was dangerous, so if this is the new standard for 4 games going forward we’d be fine with that.
He lined him up and led with an elbow to the head. What part of that is unclear? He was even holding his stick in one hand at the time of the hit so that his elbow was free for the head contact.
As for “finishing my check”, it’s the excuse of choice for every guy who’s been suspended. I think that Matt Cooke actually gets royalties on it at this point.
Head shot. Dirty hit. Suspension warranted. End of story.
Look at the replay again, dude. He lined him up shoulder to shoulder, and then Eberle ducked/reached. There is nothing “unclear” about that. Stop cherry-picking your points from the talking heads maybe, because when you hit a guy you want your stick as far away from your opponent’s body as possible. If you can find any good open ice hits when the player is holding on to his stick with both hands, I’d love to see them. Thanks for playing hockey fan! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2W3Qm1YTFc
“End of story” <————- stupid way to end a sentence.
The hit was pretty much identical to Steve Moore’s hit on Markus Naslund, and people still try to claim it was dirty to justify Bertuzzi’s stupidity, so…
