HONOUR BOUND: Lend A Hand At “Free Portrait Vancouver” This Coming Saturday

If you were to stand on the Corner of Main and Hastings this coming Saturday morning you would see a steady stream of professional photographers filing through the doors of the Carnegie Community Centre carrying their camera equipment. Following close on their heels will be make-up artists, hair stylists and lighting and set professionals. You might think that you were witnessing a film crew take shape, but the truth is that all of these people are volunteers gathering for Free Portrait Vancouver.

Jonathan Cruz came up with the idea for Free Portrait Vancouver four years ago. He’s a commercial, fashion and lifestyle photographer who has shot everyone from Jamie Oliver to Bill Clinton. He’s also one of our neighbours and a great guy. As a community member, he wanted to give back by taking, printing and framing a picture of any Downtown Eastside resident who wanted to have an image of him/herself,  maybe to send to loved ones over the holidays, and to do it for free. Last year’s event delivered more than 800 photos. This year, the goal is 1,000.

Free Portrait Vancouver is 100% non-profit and they could use your help. They’re looking for volunteers and funds for supplies, and a restaurant or two that is willing to lend a hand by helping to feed the volunteers. Contact the organisers to get involved.
