Quiet Strip Off Main & Hastings Welcomes “Dunlevy Snackbar”

IMG_2255

by Andrew Morrison | I can’t help but dig Dunlevy Snackbar, a 16-seater just opened up the street from my house (but closer to Main & Hastings). The spartan little joint was sprung from the bones of an old beauty salon and belongs to one Theo Lloyd-Kohls: a quietly earnest, enthusiastic and down-to-earth stranger whose restaurant-in-the-making seems to fit him well. The food and drink are skeletal right now as things “come together” (just coffee and baked goods), but in a few weeks, says Theo, it’ll be open for lunch proper. That means soups, salads and sandwiches, with German brunches on Saturdays, right on our office doorstep.  I always wanted a snackbar. Take a look at over a dozen more photos after leap…

  1. Thanks for the great review…Mom will be there to give him a little lift up for a week…He’s a year younger than myself, opening up a Cafe in small town Ontario…..(Pembroke) I always tell people he was born in the place.

  2. If anyone labels this “gentrification” I am going to shoot myself in the face.

    I wish him well.

  3. I think that’s very nice that Theo’s mom will be coming to help out for a week…nothing like parental support…so mom opened up a cafe, too…and son is following in her footsteps…:)

  4. hey Theo … congrats on joining the Kohls restaurant connection… your parents were the First, I WAS the second Kohls and now your the 3rd… tasty food started with out grandmother Clara, and continues now through you… but your mother didnt need any food inspiration, as she is a #1 foodie!!! so I guess that puts you in a lofty spot! again congrats!!! when u need a break, come to my home in Panama to cook for me!!!

  5. oh, nice to meet you Jim…glad to hear that Theo’s mom is a foodie…nothing like good, nutritious food to feed the body and soul…:)

  6. Theo’s coffee is as good as you can get- his cookies are addictive and to die for, and maybe even a bit healthy, as is everything else he makes.
    It’s a gem.
    GO THERE

  7. OK, I’m going there.
Especially now that my former fave coffee shop, the Bean on Gore and Union has become a total abomination.
Even all my fave staff has bailed.
So will push through the teeming hipster masses to sample his fine wares.

  8. Can someone tell me why it is called Dunlevy? At first I thought maybe the family name of the owners, but there is no mention of it in this article. I am interested as it is my family name (and if I ever mention maybe I can scam a free lunch 😉 )

  9. are the saturday brunch still happening? they haven’t update their tumblr site for ages.
