Make a point of finding your way to Granville Island some time this week. There are only a few days left before Emily Carr grad exhibition comes down and you really don’t want to miss this annual mind-blower of a show.
Over 300 students are participating this year’s show. Here are just a few Scout picks:
The North building is where you’ll catch the fine arts works. Everything was impressive.
Suzanne Fulbrook’s watercolour and saltwater portraits on unprimed canvases stood out. Possibly not best suited to the traditional living room – but very impactful. They made me wish I lived in an open concept warehouse with white everything and 70 ft ceilings.
I was also taken by Katherine Leanne Nielson’s Time With Dad series. (below)
Hands down the most beautiful use of cigarette foil I’ve ever encountered…
Stopped outside the South building to admire the snappy retro aesthetics of a Streamline trailer (adorned with the cutest ever hand-drawn labels and posters glorifying the concept of collaboration). This was the Tin Can project.
The scoop from the Tin Can website:
TIN CAN is a project in which an 18ft 1972 Streamline trailer will be converted into a multi-functional and fully mobile studio/gallery/event space. Our intention is for the project to become a platform for collaboration and public engagement. During its many stages, it will be a place where people can come together to build, make, show and share ideas with the intention of building community through the act of collaborative production, as well as through the creation of a physical space for gathering and dialogue.
The South Building featured the works by undergrads – predominantly in the Communication Design / Industrial Design stream. Great packaging ideas, graphics and, duh, industrial design. All of it inspiring.
But you don’t have to take our word for it. The show runs until May 16, from 10am to 6pm, and it‘s FREE! Hook yourself up with a good cup of coffee and a honeydip from Lee’s doughnuts before strolling down Johnston to ECUAD. There are many rooms to wander, so take your time.
If you can’t make it (or made the mistake of driving and spent 45 minutes looking for parking before you gave up and went back home annoyed to your computer), here is a little of what you could have seen if you’d had your act together…

Michelle Sproule grew up in Kitsilano and attended Bond University in Australia and the University of Victoria before receiving her graduate degree in Library Sciences from The University of Toronto. She lives by the beach in Vancouver and enjoys wandering aimlessly through the city’s shops and streets with her best friend – a beat up, sticky, grimy, and uncooperative camera.
