REPORT: Thurlow’s Legendary “Joe Fortes” Has Been Sold To Keg Boss David Aisenstat

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Joe Fortes’ owner Bud Kanke. He assured me that while he and David Aisenstat have been in discussions over the sale of the revered restaurant, nothing is yet set in stone. When told that my source was sacrosanct (I wouldn’t have posted if it wasn’t), he replied that there was “no source more sacrosanct than myself.” There’s no arguing with that. If he says it hasn’t sold, it hasn’t sold.

Before you get the least bit sentimental, can you imagine two Starbucks and two Kegs facing eachother across the same block at Robson and Thurlow? I mean, I know the area is a little corporate, but would that not demolish the space-time continuum like nobody’s business? And I like the Keg. Do I think we need one replacing the 25 year old Joe Fortes when there’s another one so close that the cooks could share the same pasta water? Not particularly. If it changes (and I don’t think it will just yet with Christmas functions and all), it’s at least comforting to remember that Aisenstat can do other things (witness The Shore Club and Ki). If he doesn’t mix it up at this location, the status quo ante will look pretty sweet. For the time being, though, love live old Joe and the many legends that’ve polished its brass and walked its checkerboard floor!

  1. I know that this has been rumored but is there actually a creditable source confirming this.

  2. If this is true I think David Aisenstat has come full circle with this icon Vancouver establishment and that it couldn’t have gone to better hands.
