“Vote, Or Shut The Fuck Up”

“Vote, Or Shut The Fuck Up” is a sign we’ve seen plastered around town, and we couldn’t agree more with the sentiment (nice one, Mr. Berglund). As we’re up in Tofino for the weekend, we made sure to sneak into City Hall before we left so we could vote early. Yeah, we picked a side, and yeah, we voted for Gregor, Heather, Andrea et al. But that’s just us. Who you vote for is [obviously] up to you. As Harry Truman once said, “decisions are made by those who show up.” As long as you step up to your local ballot box today and vote, you can hold your head high. If you don’t, well…you can do as Mr Bergulnd suggests.

  1. It’s easy to vote if you just check off some names on a long list. Doesn’t mean it’s democracy though. Most people don’t know who the candidates are, what they say they represent, or what they actually represent. Most in Vancouver barely know their neighbours, let alone any politicians (except who might make front page news). It’s easier to decide on a flavour from La Casa Gelato (and more fun) than who will best represent your interests in Vancouver. Your statement is thus juvenile, and as out of touch as our leaders.

  2. So people shouldn’t vote? And we’re juvenile for suggesting they should? Interesting point of view. If voters did their research, participating in a democracy shouldn’t prove too much of a challenge.

  3. Old rhetorical habit. By the way, over here, the sky is blue and it’s not raining.

  4. Choosing not to vote is just as valid way of participation in democracy as voting. That’s what freedom is.

The “shut up and vote” rhetoric is tired, elitist and patronizing. Please get over yourself.

Hope you had a lovely weekend in Tofino.

  5. Vote or shut up is an entirely different sentiment that shut up and vote. Think about it. We’re over ourselves, with a lovely weekend.

  6. Hey Al,
Anyone whom has the right to vote, is able and does not deserves a punch in the neck. People have fought wars, died, protested, maimed and slept with ugly people in order to gain this right. To abstain doesn’t contribute to democracy one tiny self- important bit. How can it? Democratic society is defined by working together, whether in agreement or not… for the best possible outcome….not to stand by, hands downs pants.
If you can’t get informed or be bothered, don’t hide behind apathetic self-righteousness. Fuck off.

  7. Abstaining doesn’t equal apathy.

Give me a none of the above option and I’ll vote.

  8. Agreed – a destroyed ballot is a vote. Choosing not to vote is not voting; it’s not a part of ANY democratic process. If you don’t like the options on the card, that statement is as important as a gung-ho Vision Vancouver cheerleader’s kick-jump for Gregor. The “democratic process” hinges on a ballot. However you make your mark on it is your right as a voter.
