Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

WASHED OUT – “Before” – Within & Without (Sub Pop)

Loved the debut EP. Finally back with some new material, the king of all things chillwave slam dunks his first proper full-length, and Sub Pop debut Within & Without. I’m gonna call the cover art an “interesting choice”, but it fits the vibe. Smooth jams to listen to in bed late at night with your best gal. I’ll admit, I couldn’t get too far on this album when I first heard it, but a friend included “Before” on his summer mix, and it won me over. Laptop music at its best.

The Playlist

BRIAN ENO Drums Between The Bells (Warp)

Well this is cool. Ambient music’s biggest superstar lays down some kind of hotness and, what the—Rick Holland’s poetry is getting in on the act now. Bri-Bri is still one of the best after all these years. Worth a listen or ten.

MELLOWHYPE Blackened White (Fat Possum)

Here we go mellow. OFWGKTA’s latest export to cross to the relative mainstream. These dudes would probably “kill me” if I said it to their faces, but if this stuff isn’t reminiscent of Gravediggaz and horrorcore, then punch me in my dying heart. I, for one, welcome our new horrorcoverlords.

ZOMBY Dedication (4AD)

If bizarro Panda Bear sang over a glitchcore siren-synth wiz.

SONS & DAUGHTERS Mirror Mirror (Domino)

Domino continues their hot streak with Sons & Daughters. It sounds like… it sounds like all those Factory Records bands with a touch of twang and a bit more Britpop. With girls in the band.

SHABAZZ PALACES Black Up (Sub Pop)

Rappers with sexy voices get a special place in my heart. Dude just sounds smooth, and the production is rad on this record, lots of reverse-looping shit. I love it.

JOLIE HOLLAND Pint of Blood (Anti-)

How do I say this tactfully? My mom would like this record. To be clear, I like it too. But just. Take that as you may.

GILLIAN WELCH The Harrow & The Harvest (Acony)

Shit, dudes. Gillian Welch is really good at her job. Always loved the harmonies and the long-awaited Harrow is worth every year. Moving songs about deep frustration. Heavy.

The Gig

Saturday JULY 30 – Iceage, Cult of Youth, White Lung, Nu Sensae

What a lineup. Been hearin the buzz about Iceage for several months now, they seem awesome and heavy and fun. Two of Vancouver’s finest will be rocking my face off to boot, fresh off an epicly large tour of duty in North America. Go to this show. It’s all-ages and outdoors. BBQ? Also, this interview with Iceage is fairly hilarious.
