Tea & Two Slices: On UFC Goons, Farmed Salmon & Paper Terror

Gay bashing victims blame UFC fight event. I’m going to go ahead and concur, seeing as how I was called a fag 3 times with a 2 block radius by Ed Hardy wearing mouth-breathers. I say we let them have one more UFC fight at GM Place, lock the doors and pump chloroform into the air, then let anyone who’s ever been called a fag by one of these idiots unleash on them with stale baguettes and leather straps. Now that would bring in some revenue.

TERROR IN THE PARK! Woman found dead in Pacific Spirit Park not murdered: police. Much to the chagrin of the Province’s front page editors.

Hey Kirk, no proof farms hurting wild salmon. Yeah well, there’s also no proof that they aren’t. Besides, what’s in it for you, Jon Ferry? I mean, how would it hurt you if there were no more salmon farms? Or are you just devoted to being a laggard at all costs?

Oh, wow, so this is pretty funny. It’s the Chris Jims James show on The Dependent. He came along on one of my walking tours and pretty much stole the show. He can also kick a mean penalty shot while holding a beer, wearing sandals, and smoking a cigarette. Also, sorry to those England fans we heckled.

  1. hahahahahaaha… “mouth breathers” – my favorite saying. i knew there was a reason i liked you Sean.

with such a massive congregation of n’er-do-wells and miscreants in one place, i would say that this type of incident was inevitable. i feel horribly for that poor couple but i’m also glad that this was the only (recorded at least) manifestation of that collective ignorant rage.

    can you tell i’m not a u.f.c. fan? 🙂

  2. It’s also a great song by Jesus Lizard, look it up. But to reference another great band, Sloan, it’s not the sport I hate, it’s their fans. The point I would like to make, is that these people exist anyways, so why not charge the UFC to police every block like it was the Olympics. That way our boys in blue get some sweet OT. This sport is a lot tamer, and has really complied with regulation. We don’t want it becoming a backyard phenomena. We need to accept it and absorb the costs, we need to normalize it not criminalize it. As an aside, I can’t help but think of that Borat scene in the octagon.

  3. Do you really think those two guys would have not taken out a straight guy and his girlfriend, or two male friends, or a couple of ladies either?
They were drunk, and doing something stupid. Seems twice as dumb to approach a couple of meatheads and aggravate the situation.

Seems like the victims need to practice conflict avoidance, the first step of which is A = Avoid Potentially Dangerous Situations. Telling drunken wall pee’ers what to do ranks up there in the dumb and dumber category.

  4. One ticket please- sounds like GT’s. Maybe a few back up stale baguettes.
&Just so we’re clear- letting a good baguette go stale is sacrilege.
Bad stale baguettes only pls. for this adventure.

  5. Agree with UFC- I don’t if it was my outfit on Saturday or what. But I was called a fag and was told that I hope I enjoy hell, faggot. I was so shocked all I could do was laugh, and then run really fast.

  6. As one of the biggest MMA fans out there anywhere, having been a wrestler and judo guy prior to the UFC and following UFC from 1993, a lot of hardcore fans live this love/hate thing with the sport. We love the sport, we hate the majority of “fans” who dont really appreciate the overall sport but just want to see bangin n brawlin.

However, if one thing’s been constant from the media since its inception, its quite a bit of ignorance, sensationalism, etc. There are sports just as violent or more than have been mainstream for ages, getting sportspage coverage on TV, newspapers, magazines.

On the subject of UFC footing the bill for security, Im curious if the Canucks would be asked to the same. I’ll be the first person to acknowledge the higher douche ratio in UFC fans to hockey fans but would there be the same kind of buzz from an incident if this had been after a Canucks game? Or would it have been just chalked up to goon type people and violence in general?

More importantly, there are 2 questions that I am completely disappointed with much of the media on (the Straight, the Tyee, Beyond Robson) that have not been asked and I believe are quite essential to this incident:

Have the “gay-bashing” and connection to the UFC in this incident actually been CONFIRMED?

At the time of one of the victim’s press conference, VPD chief Chu expressed his concerns about security surrounding UFC events (a legit concern i would agree) however he stated that “There is a second fear that is being generated in the community by this incident and that is the belief that violent sports like Ultimate Fighting put the entire community at risk by attracting violent offenders that may be fans of the sport…To date we’ve looked into this. We have asked our crime analysts to research this incident and for statistical evidence of this linkage. I could tell you so far we have determined there is none.”

I think it would also be a bit more responsible to actually confirm if the 2 attackers were actually at the UFC. So far, I havent seen this but we are moving forward with this anyhow.

Also, this incident went from alleged or suspected gay-bashing incident to a real one fast and I havent seen any confirmation on that either.

I know legally, there is a definition of gay-bashing and hate crimes, however, to my understanding it is either the premeditated or act of violence against a person BECAUSE they are gay. Why havent bloggers and media such as yourself explored this incident or tried to actually confirm this as an actual gay-bash before labelling it as one?

As the comment by Ed above and others have commented in the other articles i have seen, it is very likely these 2 would have acted out on anyone that approached them the way the 2 victims did in the state the 2 attackers were in unless they turned around and perhaps discovered they were heavily outnumbered or outsized (yes, its also the kind of people they are and the kind of people the UFC attracts, i know this more than anyone).

If I, as a guy with an Asian background, walked up to those 2 guys and told them to piss somewhere else, I would, first off, be ready for confrontation. And two, if in the midst of that confrontation, they called me a chink in the process of throwing punches my way, I would def take that, personally, as an escalated situation above just a regular confrontation but I would not report that to the police as an Asian bashing incident.

I’m not saying that it wasnt worth the victims reporting that the attackers may have said “faggot” or whatever during the attack but as Sean said himself, those words were hurled his way which may lend support to the fact that that term can be thrown out indiscriminately.

I’m all for sharing the concern by media and police chief about these scum ass MFers doing what they may do, however, I believe its also irresponsible and disingenuous for media to label this as a gay-bashing incident linked to the UFC without confirmation or discussion.

As someone who has been involved with “ethnic media,” I believe that crying wolf can work against the cause. Without confirmation or discussion of whether this was an actual gay-bashing incident, this could be a case of crying wolf as well in my opinion.

  7. To add, Sean, you are calling out the Province on a incident to which they labelled in error: “Woman found dead in Pacific Spirit Park not murdered: police. Much to the chagrin of the Province’s front page editors.”

Could this not be something similar?

Note: if the connection and gaybashing has been confirmed, then I would appreciate for real to read about it. I just havent seen it which is why I question what I am.
