Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

THE SHEEPDOGS – “I Don’t Know” – Learn & Burn (The Sheepdogs)

A very controversial tune picked for this week’s Track. I am no stranger to controversy, though. I welcome it with open arms. This band was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone…because they won a contest. They were then featured on Project Runway in a particularly embarrasing fashion, but the point is…the songs are quite rad. CCR-type vibes, real Canadian lovers slinging guitars and whatnot. We got more questions regarding our stock of this record than any other title this year. Yes we do!

The Playlist

CHILDISH GAMBINO Camp (Glassnote)

This guy is a rapper who also moonlights as an actor on the TV show called Community (or is he an actor that moonlights as a rapper? I dunno). This is his fourth solid, hilarious and intelligent record under the C Gamb moniker.

BILL FRISELL All We Are Saying (Savoy Jazz)

One of the greatest improvisational guitar players of all time tackles one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Frisell takes on John Lennon’s work in sixteen pieces; all gorgeous and flowing with his band of musicians.

KING MIDAS SOUND Without You (Hyperdub)

KMS re-works his 2009 long-player Waiting For You with a little help from his friends. D-d-d-ub. Sa-sa-sa step.

DEER TICK Divine Providence (Dine Alone Records)

One part the worst album art of the year and one part excellent New York indie rock combine to even out into what I consider “a record worth checking out!”

VOID Sessions 1981-83 (Dischord)

Unearthed “sessions” (as the titled suggests) from seminal DC hardcore band that got criminally overlooked in their hey day.

The Gig

Sunday DECEMBER 18 – Dinosaur Jr @ Commodore Ballroom

If you’re not going to this show, best to just keep quiet about it; say you’re already away for the holidays. No need to let your peers in on the fact that you’re missing the band that’s perfected everything that is beautiful and filthy modern in rock and roll music. Feel like if Jesus was born in modern times that JLouMurph would be appointed the three wise men and would bring the kid guitar solos, exotic tastin’ pizza pies and a few slurred words of advice from Mascis, the King of the Slackers.
