Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

“Drug” from White Denim – D (Downtown Music)

Austin power trio +1 extra guitarist return for another round of smooth garage rock. This song is actually pretty awesome. It’s called “Drug”… heh heh. No, but seriously…I like their use of space between the huge guitar chords. Got a fairly legit classic rock vibe happening which, I’ll admit, usually rubs me the wrong way. But they pull it off. Cool and forward-thinking band.

The Playlist

RICHARD PINHAS & MERZBOW Rhizome (Cuneiform)

One of my favourite noise musicians teams up with guitar looper dude Dick Pinhas for a record of maximum carnage. Love it.

JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER Earth Sound System (Fire)

“The Other Greenwood” and co. return with their one millionth album of insanely weird rock music!

ARCHERS OF LOAF Icky Mettle [REISSUE] (Merge)

Apparently, these old farts just played their single from ’92 on Fallon and reissued their first record. Not sure what the technique was there but I like it. Throwback indie rock from the Technology Triangle of North Carolina.

ALEXANDER Alexander (Community Music)

Solo effort from the Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros dude. The single has whistling. Remember that popular song with the whistling a few years ago?

EDDIE VEDDER Ukelele Songs (Monkeywrench)

Never judge a book by its cover. Except in this case.

The Gig

Fri AUGUST 19 SIA – COMMODORE

This should be insane. Australian megastar Sia arrives in Vancouver next weekend and I hope she kills it. Lady had some panic attack problems over the last few years. Judging by her wacky posters plastered around town, she could still use a few chill pills — look at that hairdo! — but here’s to hoping she makes a triumphant comeback on this tour.
