Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

TY SEGALL – “Goodbye Bread” – Goodbye Bread (Drag City)

The first time I heard Ty Segall was this morning. He writes really beautiful songs. No gimmicks or smokes ‘n mirrors, just fuzzy guitars and reverberating vocals to cool you off in the summer heat (I mean, if there was heat in Vancouver). If it’s OK for rock and roll music to be pretty, Ty Segall is hitting random letters on the typewriter and getting all the words in the right order.

The Playlist

MEMORY TAPES Player Piano (Carpark)

Nice little jams from New Jersey studio geek Dayve Hawk—his name sounds like the coolest kid in 6th grade.

JOHN MAUS We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves (Ribbon Music)

Homie has clocked time with Ariel Pink but his impressive resume doesn’t need to speak for him. This record stands on its own. Joy Division-y, but better (whoops!)

SBTRKT SBTRKT (Young Turks)

Masked weirdo producer from UK. Here’s a sleek sexy tune featuring one of my favourite leading ladies, Little Dragon.

DIRTY THREE Whatever You Love, You Are [PLAY BUTTON] (Touch & Go)

What the…

MERCY TIES/GRENADES Split [LP] (Echolalic)

Another excellent offering here on the Zulu shelves from one of my favourite Seattle labels, Echolalic. This release pits the heavy-as-hell one-two punch of Mercy Ties and Grenades against each other. Jeez…

V/A This is Dubstep 2011 (Get Darker)

The Gig

Saturday JULY 30 – Ty Segall @ Biltmore

The featured artist in this month’s Track, Ty Segall’s bringing the pain to the Biltmore this Saturday. I suspect many an unsuspecting Vancouverite to be hiding their tears from their drinking buddies as Ty & the Gang float through their repertoire of ballads and rock jammers. Cool.
