Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…
The Track
BON IVER – “Perth” – Bon Iver, Bon Iver (Jagjaguwar)
Eagerly anticipated follow-up to modern classic “For Emma, Forever Ago”. This one took us all by surprise and I think it ruffled a few feathers, but I enjoy it more with every listen. I honestly can’t tell if Vernon is singing in English most of the time, but I’m a fly in the face of reason: I don’t really care what the lyrics are. He’s got an angelic voice and I could probably listen to him sing about omelettes or internet porn and still get caught with tears in my eyes. I’d like to hear him go bigger and louder, like he does on opener “Perth”. I need some stadium status type stuff from this band.
The Playlist
SONDRE LERCHE Sondre Lerche (Mona)
Intimacy. I have issues with it. Sondre makes me feel better about it. Sondre makes me feel like it’s OK.
JUNIOR BOYS It’s All True (Domino)
Now everyone report to the floor, to the dance floor, to the dance floor. If I remember correctly these guys are polar opposites in their personal lives. Conflict breeds creativity – their new LP is a giant load of electropop fun.
AMON TOBIN Isam (Ninja Tune)
Montreal’s finest video game score composer returns for his EIGHTH LP on Ninja Tune. Sample based blip bloop type of stuff!
THOUSANDS The Sound of Everything [LP] (Echolalic)
Heartbreakin’ tunes from Seattle bedroom duo. Gorgeous, haunting melodies that circle around me and leave traces of themselves for weeks.
MOON DUO Mazes [LP] (Sacred Bones)
A band that will likely always remain in the ranks of Zulu staff favourites. Their blistering new album is finally here on heavy-duty thick-as-hell wax. Sounds so much better this way.
OFF! First Four EPs [7” Box Set] (Vice)
This little box set arrived the other day. My favourite thing right now. Four 7”s of rad little hardcore jams. What’s that thing called where you’re at a basement show and you twirl your arms around like a windmill? That.
CULTS Cults (Columbia)
Boy/girl duo from Brooklyn, NY. Really fun, poppy summery songs to listen to on your U2 Special Edition iPod.
BLACK EAGLE CHILD – Lobelia (Preservation)
Fascinating home recording project from my home state of Wisconsin – I had to listen. Glad I did. I’m a sucker for loop stations, and this homie knows his way around one.
The Gig
Saturday JULY 9 INFECTED MUSHROOM
Every once in a while I like to get completely freaked out. I’ll be honest, I have never listened to Infected Mushroom, but now is one of those times that I feel like I need to broaden my horizons and look at a different side of life. Wikipedia tells me I’m in for a show of psychedelic trance from Northern Israel. I can’t wait… I can’t wait.
