Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

“Yonkers” from TYLER, THE CREATOR – Goblin

This is 2012 rap. Yeah, it’s really hyped up and yeah you’ve already seen this video a million times but dammit this guy is the freshest thing around and the kid holds your attention like nobody I’ve seen since Eminem. I really think Tyler/Odd Future have the potential to be the new Eminem, the new Wu-Tang, the new hip-hop that completely saturates pop culture for a few years. Rightfully so. It’s A.D.D., stream-of-consciousness vulgarity is entirely entertaining and impossible to turn away from. Pretty amped that he’s arrived on the Zhelves.

The Playlist

FLEET FOXES Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop)

What do you think it feels like to know that you wrote the most beautiful album of the year?

WILD BEASTS Smother (Domino)

NME darlins 3rd effort. My ears really perked up when I heard a few of these soaring melodies. Really pretty band.

CASS MCCOMBS – Wit’s End (Domino)

D-d-d-damn, son. Stunning opening track – one of my favourites of the year. Killed it at The Waldorf in the spring. If you weren’t there, everyone in the crowd was in a trance. Super weepy vibes.

HANDSOME FURS
– Sound Kapital (Sub Pop)

Grin-inducing. You know this is what Boeckner really wants to focus on. Wolf Parade’s gotta be the cash cow to fund this awesome husband-wife band. I love this shit. You know what’s weird? CNN produces a show called “Indie Asia” starring Handsome Furs where they document their Asian tours. Huh.

CHAD VANGAALEN – Diapar Island (Sub Pop)

Congrats Chad for penning the album title that makes me feel grosser than the name of my brother’s short-lived trash band Cold Hole.

BLACK LIPS Arabia Mountain (Vice)

I still don’t know what “cowpunk” is and I never knew what “flower-punk” was either, but both are back and people still won’t shut up about it!

ANTLERS Burst Apart (Frenchkiss)

Well then. After the emotionally devastating “Hospice”, the Brooklyn indie trio return with a record chock full of tons of solid sonic references. You got your Radiohead, you got your Arcade Fire, you got your bedroom pop. C’mon, this is a gimme!

The Gig

Wed JUNE 15 BLACK LIPS – COMMODORE

Does anyone remember who won that fight between the Black Lips dude and the Wavves dude? I feel like I remember Wavvy kicking the Lips’ guy’s teeth in but it’s getting hazy in my memory. Coulda been a publicity stunt but the point is that these guys are guaranteed to do something totally apeshit at every single show. If you feel lucky, punk, feel free to drop your name into our draw box at the store for a shot at winning a pair of free tickets!
