San Francisco’s “Vetiver” Set To Play The Biltmore

There are a few people in the city who can say a concert is going to be “good” and I know it will be without question. One of those people is Aaron at the Biltmore and Aaron is excited about Vetiver. Don’t let the bands Myspace descriptor (Thrash/Black Metal/Christian Rap) scare you – kickass American folk is more like it. Just click on their Myspace play button or the You Tube vid above. They play the Biltmore next week.

Here is why you might want to attend:

“Tight Knit” is the fourth full-length album from Vetiver–singer/songwriter Andy Cabic’s ever-evolving musical home base. Luminous and surprising, Tight Knit unfolds like a road trip down Highway 1, towards Cabic’s home in San Francisco. It represents a summation of the different styles and directions heard on past Vetiver releases, while it introduces some unexpected twists.

Vetiver’s Andy Cabic grew up in northern Virginia and spent a few years in Greensboro, North Carolina, playing guitar, writing music and recording as a member of The Raymond Brake, which is where he first met future Vetiver members Trippe and Dunn. After moving to San Francisco, Cabic helped form the rock band Tussle, and at the same time began recruiting other local musicians, friends and confederates, including Colm O’Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Devendra Banhart, and Joanna Newsom, among others, to record the 2004 debut, “Vetiver” for the Dicristina Stair Builders label.

From Spin Magazine: “Vetiver’s music sounds like it was written in midday sunshine, yet longs for a dark bedroom in the dead of night. Andy Cabic’s balmy folk songs pull from pert shades of doo-wop (“Everyday”) and Latin syncopation (“Strictly Rule”). But his whispery voice can take on a Donovan-like sultriness, making a song such as “Sister” far sexier than a song named “Sister” should be. Maybe Cabic has taken a cue from former Vetiver collaborator and babe magnet Devendra Banhart: Being laid-back ain’t that far from laying right down.”

They play with special guests Richard Swift & Sun Wizard.
