The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS), located at UBC Farm, is a unique research centre that aims to understand and fundamentally transform local and global food systems towards a more sustainable, food secure future. The centre is a living laboratory, committed to finding solutions to both the local and global challenges facing food systems sustainability and translating solutions to improve personal, community, and environmental health. Through our Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles, the Centre models new paradigms for sustainable communities.
In addition to intensive food systems research happening at the UBC Farm, the site is also a hub for community enthusiasts of all ages. During our growing season (June-October), we host lively farmers markets, where visitors have the opportunity to purchase our fresh and local produce, herbs, flowers, and merchandise. While we are still currently working towards organic certification, all produce is grown according to British Columbia Certified Organic Management Standards. Our Saturday markets are especially unique, as local vendors and artisans gather to share their hand crafted goods, free range meats, musical talents, and more. The Farm is a year-round centre for community engagement through workshops, volunteer opportunities, Children’s programs, farm tours, and through collaboration with various Indigenous initiatives. Located on unceded ancestral Musqueam territory, the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems works closely with the Musqueam Garden, Maya in Exile Garden, Tu’wusht Project, and Indigenous Health Research and Education Garden. We also offer an 8-month Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture which has a comprehensive curriculum designed for aspiring farmers, gardeners, and all who share a passion for sustainable food system development.

The vision for the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm is encompassed in Cultivating Place, a strategic academic plan. Authored by the South Campus Academic Planning Committee in 2010, Cultivating Place integrates with UBC’s Sustainability Academic Strategy and, honouring the farm’s place on traditional Musqueam territory, UBC’s Aboriginal Strategic Plan. It arose from the UBC Board of Governors’ December 2008 directive to develop an “academically rigorous and globally significant” plan for the 24-ha area on UBC’s South Campus, addressing issues of sustainability.
