 About Granville Island

16949358188_e501f91e7b_k

Once a local’s secret, Granville Island Public Market is the center of what is now close to 40 acres of urban delight, spilling over with great restaurants, bars, galleries, studios, 7 theatres, and some of the best fresh food and ingredients available. For over 45 years, the Public Market has hosted world renowned chefs, local farmers, fishers, and “foodies” as they shop for direct-from-farm produce, fishing-boat-catch, and hard to find ingredients. With a loyal, local customer base, many of the food merchants continue to flourish after 20, 25, and even 40 years on Granville Island, with several merchants now run by their third generation. Customers know when they ask for advise they are asking an expert, not just a cashier. New merchants benefit from the loyal customers and ensures the Public Market remains fresh and current.

Additionally, an artisan market of over 60 different food and artisan businesses changes every few weeks, allowing Granville Island to be one of the largest food business incubators in Canada. There are also 16 restaurants, bars & lounges on Granville Island ranging from laid-back West Coast (think fish & chips or buckets of clams) to fine dining. With the Island surrounded by water on three sides, most have a waterfront view. There’s even a waterfront hotel on the Island.

Canada’s first microbrewery (Granville Island Brewing), an award-winning distillery, Liberty Distillers, an artisan sake maker, who grows his own rice, and many artisans whose production kitchen are on the Island (Oyama Sausage, Kasama Chocolate, Bon Macaron) truly make this a not to miss destination for locals and visitors alike.
