Bob Kronbauer is a freelance creative director and photographer as well as the editor of the local blog-turned-not-for-profit, VancouverIsAwesome.com. In this weekly roundup he’ll share with you his favourite people, places and things that make up the city he loves so much. Some might be obvious while others are hidden, and some might be current while still others may be slices of Vancouver’s past. The one thing they all have in common is that they fall under the category of totally awesome…
Person
One of my favourite people in the city is PD of Skull Skates. I was sitting on a bench on Main Street last Sunday and waved at him as he rolled down the street on a longboard with a loaf of french bread or something tucked under his arm. He doesn’t live anywhere near Main Street so it made me smile to see that he had used a skateboard to get there. He’s been a huge supporter of skateboarding, music, and just general DIY culture in this city for a really long time.
Place
Blim’s new space in Chinatown! Blim is an art and craft facility that offers workshops in screen printing, button making, knitting and tons more and they just moved onto Pender between Main and Columbia. The first floor of their new space is where their store and workshops are located and the second floor houses 12 artist studios, one of which I now spend my weekdays in. Their grand opening of the new space is this Saturday, you should stop by.
Thing
I love the fact that CBC Radio 3 calls Vancouver home and it always stuns me when people say they’ve never listened to it. It’s the home of independent Canadian music and finding it is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. They’re on Sirius satellite radio and they also stream off of their web site at radio3.cbc.ca. I’m anxiously awaiting the day that they start broadcasting on FM radio like their big brother, good ol’ Radio One.
