The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week, from our calendar to yours!

MARATHON | There’s an Indiana Jones Trilogy at The Rio Theatre on Friday night. Yup, you can dig in for over six hours of awesome adventure. We’re talking Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade back to back to back. Add a grilled cheese and a cold beer and there’s no reason to leave until well after midnight.

FLEA | The good folks at Eastside Flea throw down with one of their terrific three-day markets this weekend. Not only can you cruise tables and booths of over 50 vendors offering cool-as-heck handmade wares, visit some of the on-site studios, meet makers, listen to music, eat food and drink drinks, but there’s also ice cream to be had, pinball to be played, and outdoor courtyard hanging out to be done. There’s always good times at the Ellis Building! Friday night is the party portion of the weekend. The market proper happens Sat + Sun from 11am – 5pm.

FOLK FEST | The Vancouver Folk Fest spreads across the grasses of Jericho Park this weekend, and everything points to it being a pretty amazing gig. The four day event is a local tradition that speaks to Vancouver’s hippy roots. Expect good things: The Bahamas, C.R. Avery, The Belle Game and Joe Henry will be there; so will Billy Bragg, Kathleen Edwards, Blind Pilot and a whole whack of other fantastic musicians and bands. All of that AND serious summer weather at Jericho? Flat out awesome.

ART |  Take some time for art appreciation this weekend. The area known as ‘The Flats’ (between Main St, and Clark Dr. just above Industrial Ave) is home to numerous studios and galleries – from long established Vancouver art scene players like Monte Clark, Winsor Gallery, and Gallery Jones to next wave galleries like Macaulay & Co. Fine Art, SoMa and Chernoff Fine Art, not to mention hubs like Grunt and Arts Factory – the area offers something for everyone. This Saturday the tight little flock throw their annual summer block party and that means ten open houses and lots of good energy. Hustle down to cruise exhibitions, meet fellow art enthusiasts and get to know this ‘cultural cornerstone’.

SUNDAY ON SATURDAY | Sunday Cider is back for the second instalment of the Summer Sizzler Series this weekend. Hustle over to the friendly eastside cidery for an outdoor afternoon of music, food, good vibes and craft cider (5 taps will be flowing including Sesh, TropHop, Wild, Gulf Island and Sunday Sidra). We’re particularly interested in tasting TropHop (a “hazy, hopped cider blended with fresh pineapple juice” that is rumoured to be as refreshing as it sounds). There will also be food (El Cartel will be on site with their truck and ice cream sandwiches by Brown Paper Packages (always outstanding). Not sure you’re feeling social? Slip in and grab a growlers to-go – they transport nicely to beaches and parks.

URBANARIUM | Founded by a group of architects, planners and other passionate city dwellers, Urbanarium believes in “…informing, educating and engaging the citizens of Metro Vancouver to help guide decision making to protect our future well being.” This week catch a Movie Set Walking Tour that takes a look at “how Vancouver manages to stand in for cities from all over the world – from historic quarters and gritty alleys to polished and shiny cities of the future, and what contributes to making it Hollywood North.” Lots to consider!

LEARN | Parks Canada is dispatching some of their knowledgable peeps to Stanley Park to help interested Vancouverites become more familiar with the outdoors. From event organizers: “Whether you’re a full blown environmentalist or a budding nature appreciator, join us for a fun and engaging workshop about nearby ecosystems and park safety.” Spend a sunny hour getting schooled on identifying local plants, birds and animals and, because we are talking Parks Board here, there will be a healthy smattering of safety and preparation tips. A crash course in outdoor everything is a smart move this time of year. Bonus: it’s free!

EXPLORE | Catch the sunset from Iona Beach Regional Park (just north of the Vancouver International Airport) in Richmond. Iona is a beautiful stretch of sandy shoreline that spreads toward the sea at the mouth of the Fraser River. In addition to walking the beach (when the tide is out it goes on for ever), there’s also a walkable breakwater, raised boardwalks, and a crazy network of unmarked trails. To get there, cross the Arthur Laing Bridge on your way to the airport but turn right at the first traffic light (Grauer Road) and follow the signs.
