by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…
NEEDS | Local band Needs is having a 7 inch release party tonight. Needs recently recorded 5 songs at Noise Floor in Ladysmith and put the record out under their own steam…get out there and show your local artists your support! Also taking the stage: New Armour from Toronto and Vancouver band Storc.
Tuesday, August 27 | Doors 7pm |4340 Main St. | DETAILS
MALKIN BOWL | An outdoor concert at Malkin Bowl has got to be one of the sweetest opportunities of any summer. This week there are two amazing shows planned: first up, Snoop Dogg (Lion). Repeat: Snoop Dogg at Malkin Bowl. How cool is that? Hot damn, that’s going to be a good show! Next: The Sheepdogs (with guests Imaginary Cities). You’ll never get tickets at this point, that is unless you’re rolling on Craigslist. With summer on the wane, it’s time to dig deep!
Snoop | Wednesday, August 28 | 7pm | Malkin Bowl | Sold Out | $50 | DETAILS
Sheepdogs | Friday, August 30 | 6:30pm | Malkin Bowl | $30 | DETAILS
ART | Up on Main Street, Hot Art Wet City Gallery is showing Process Colour, an exhibition of works by local independent comic creators. It shows – through various stages of sketches through to finished product – the path that each of the four participating artist follow in taking a concept from an idea to a completed comic. The exhibition ends this Friday with a talk and book launch (“Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant”) by artist Tony Cliff.
Friday, August 30 | Hot Art Wet City Gallery 2206 Main Street | Free | DETAILS
RELAX | Make some time to attend the last Enchanted Evenings outdoor summer concert at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden this week. Scoot down to the serene oasis of swaying bamboo and lilypad-strewn ponds to listen to the “smoky, soulful blues” of musician Jim Byrnes.

SCORE | Don’t miss out on the Strathcona Garage Sale this weekend. This is no piddly little gig with headless barbies and VHS tapes. This garage sale will be big and full of good stuff, everythong from vintage clothing, furniture, and vinyl to books, bikes and pottery. The sale will take place mostly on Hawks Avenue, focusing on the 700 and 800 blocks. It will also extend westward along the park side of the 700-block of East Georgia Street. Pro tip: hit the Wilder Snail for coffee and kick back in MacLean Park afterwards.
Saturday, August 31 | 10am-5pm | Hawks Ave, Strathcona | DETAILS
LAUGH | Comedian Doug Stanhope will be doing a stand-up set at the Rickshaw on Saturday night. Stanhope is known for being abrasive, brutally honest, vulgar and frequently offensive, so this isn’t a good gig to bring Grandma along to, unless she’s of a similar stripe. If you and your thick skin are looking for a good solid giggle, grab a seat and laugh your ass off.
Saturday, August 31 | Doors 8pm | The Rickshaw Theatre (254 E. Hastings) | $30 | DETAILS
SUMMER BBQ | Slip on to the sky train and head for River Market in New West this Sunday for the 3rd annual Re-up BBQ. By the time you arrive, the meat loving team will have commandeered the entire upper floor of the the market and will be busily BBQing house made sausages, slow-smoking beef brisket and, yes, smoking a whole hog. Wash everything down with Parallel 49 beer. Like any good BBQ, there will be a patio. Hang out listening to music and watching the Fraser River float by.
Sunday, September 1 | 5:30pm | 810 Quayside Drive, New Westminster | $45 | DETAILS
CHOW | Food Cart Fest goes down this Sunday. Take advantage of the fact that a flock of some 20 food trucks will be parked around communal tables ready to feed you. Expect Soho Road, Mom’s Grilled Cheese, Mogu, Roaming Dragon, Vij’s, Yolks, and Tacofino – maybe even The Juice Truck. And the fun doesn’t stop there. There will also be live music, a community market, and all manner of ancillary vendors making it the raddest bit of undeveloped real estate in the city. Food Cart Fest is located between Olympic Village and Cambie St. Bridge.
Sundays, June 23 – September 22 | 12-5pm | 215 West 1st Avenue $2 entry charge | DETAILS
