Never Heard Of It is a series of stories exploring Vancouver’s many informal hole-in-the-wall eateries.
by Marshall To | Just north of the intersection of Main and King Edward is Hawkers Delight, a usually packed neighbourhood staple offering comforting, hearty, plentiful, and cheap Malaysian and Singaporean fare (cash only). By name alone it would be hard to guess at the cuisines within, but once inside the exotic curry aromas and sizzle sounds leave little doubt. Also, the mural of the historic Clarke Quay in Singapore is kind of a dead giveaway.
I would suggest the Chicken Curry Noodle (thick noodles perfect for soup with a sweet coconut and potato curry broth); the essential Hainanese Chicken on Rice (cold but delicious chicken leg with rice flavoured with chicken drippings); and homemade roti with a coconut milk dip. If you’re unfamiliar with the milieu, there’s a handy picture menu above the cash desk that’ll give you an idea of what to expect. Hint: cheap and cheerful deliciousness.
