Vancouver, BC | The 11th annual Vancouver Latin American Film Festival is on and running until September 8th. What started as a single-venue, three-day event has blossomed into a vibrant, multiple-venue, ten-day celebration of Latin American culture. This year’s festival will feature over forty of the best feature-length and short films (both fiction and documentary) to come out of Latin America over the past year. Highlights of VLAFF’s 11th festival include: a Spotlight on Colombian Cinema; Canada Looks South, a program of films by Latin-Canadian filmmakers; Asian Perspectives from Latin America, a series of four feature-length films that address themes of Asian identity within a Latin American context; and, a series of talkbacks with guest directors following selected screenings. The festival will culminate with the presentation of four awards: the First-Time Directors Award; the Al Jazeera Documentary Award; the VLAFF Short Film Award; and, the Youth Choice Award. About SFU Woodwards

SFU Woodward’s Cultural and Community Programs (SFU W) is dedicated offering high-value but low cost art events for the public. Located in Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in the historic Woodward’s redevelopment, we offer a wide variety of free public programming on a weekly basis. We believe that art and culture should be enjoyed and experienced by everyone.

By engaging the Lower Mainland’s professional arts communities of the lower Mainland through creative, entrepreneurial partnerships, we offer wide-range of cultural programming to local residents. Whether it is dance, boxing, community, literature, politics, music, or film; you’ll find something in our programming calendar to suit your tastes.

In 2012/13, SFU created a distinct mainstage series featuring world-renowned Canadian artists, including performer and playwright Robert Lepage, Governor-award winning playwright Daniel MacIvor, and Juno-award winning musician Jim Byrnes. Our robust co-presentation program included diverse arts organizations, festivals and other cultural partners. In our second year of operation, we have presented over 100 cultural performances with over 20 diverse community partnerships, including: DanceHouse, Vancouver, The PuSh International Festival of the Performing Arts, the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival, Dancing on the Edge Festival, Indian Summer Festival, Turning Point Ensemble, Hard Rubber Orchestra, the Merging Media Conference, Vancouver Moving Theatre, the Gong Gamelan Festival, Project Limelight, the Spur Festival, and Reel Causes.

SFU W works closely with SFU’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement to explore opportunities that advance community engagement with community partners. These connections include community partnerships, neighbourhood outreach, venue accessibility, free programming, public forums and a community ticketing program.  SFU W also works side-by-side with the SFU’s School for Contemporary Arts in the development of SFU Contemporary Arts Faculty Series and Guest Artist/Residency Programs. In 2012, Kidd Pivot and Bard on the Beach were guest residents. Events in 2013/14 include co-presentations of Aprons’ for Gloves Restaurant Rumble, the Vancouver Queer Film Festival, the Pick of the Fringe Festival, 90 screenings with the Vancouver International Film Festival, our seasonal fundraiser Bah! Humbug!, and lectures by noted speakers journalist Gwynne Dyer, cartoon journalist Joe Sacco, and choreographer Liz Lerman.
