Restaurateur Mark Brand Picks Up Landmark “Save On Meats”

April-22-2010-mcs-020

Mark Brand, co-owner of Boneta, The Diamond, Sea Monstr Sushi and Shark + Hammers, has secured a lease on the building that has housed the iconic Save On Meats at 43 West Hastings for over half a century. Possession comes in July. Brand has food related plans for every floor, as well as a restaurant at street level. Will the glorious, towering neon sign stay with its smiling pigs and dollar signs? About 2 million people hope so…
More details soon. I’m going prawn fishing…

  1. Please Mark- Keep the sign. As a life long Vancouver resident, it is sad to see my city remove it’s history over and over again. This sign is a big part of what Vancouver was – it would be very said if it would no longer exist

  2. I hope Mark decides to keep the signage, but more importantly I hope he re-establishes the quality inexpensive butcher shop that was so important to the people in the community! The city has a serious lack of good butchers, so bringing back Save On Meats in it’s original form would be a smart, community conscious decision!

  3. In addition, I hope the butcher shop comes back.I used to go there once a week and by stuff for my lunch and it came to around 1.50/day when I broke down the numbers. It needs to stay a place for low income residents in the neighborhood. I appreciate what Mark has done for the Gastown revitalization- but save on meats is a place for the community and it needs to stay as such.
Mark – please keep it the way it was…………….

  4. I agree the butcher shop as it was is a must. Once again Mark your socking all of us!

  5. Jeff you are ridiculous.
Don’t mess with original neon! That pig loves to ham it up where he is, please leave him be!

  6. Common….Are you kidding! Another Mark Brand restaurant. Sean Heather may as well open in the same building and we’ll have a true gastown party. Maybe they can get a bartender from chambar, cook from boneta, cook from Bao Bei, ex sous chef of lumeire and an ex owner of Chill winston and open a place there too. Seems to be the trend.

An 8 million dollar Cactus club next door and lets rock!! Go Vancouver…….

  7. Hey, Bob. You know the old adage; The family that Fucks together, Stays together.

  8. Looking forward to seeing how Mark re-invents this space. Mean time anybody looking for inexpensive meat and great service needs to head a few blocks east to PAY-LESS MEATS at Powell and Jackson. Owner is really nice guy. Was a banker in Korea before moving here and taking over Pay-Less Meats. I’ve shopped there for years, more often then Save on Meats. But I would occasionally buy at Save on Meats too if I was eating at the lunch counter or picking up other grocery items.
