A no messing around guide to the coolest things to eat, drink and do in Vancouver and beyond. Community. Not clickbait.

Because MALL is a 4 letter word

Don’t take your money to the mall this weekend and forget driving downtown where you have to shell out for underground parking. Instead, walk, bike, or take the skytrain over to Sixth and Commercial to take in the Got Craft show.

With over 50 vendors displaying handmade goods (from clothing and jewelry to ceramics and wall art), Got Craft is a solid bet, and for a bunch of reasons besides. It reduces your carbon shop-print, keeps your hard-earned money in the local community, and supports Vancouver’s handmade revolution. Best of all, at Got Craft you can get your hands on the latest and coolest of indie wares.

The last time Lotus Events pulled together the cool kids of the indie craft scene was back in early December. I loved the pre-Christmas line-up but I was hamstrung by my Christmas list and its closely related party-pooper sibling: the Christmas list budget. Sadly, I resisted the urge to buy for myself. But this time will be different. Sure, there are lots of reasons I should take a list. Mother’s Day is right around the corner and I have a few friends with birthday’s coming up. Still, I’m feeling rather selfish (just kidding Mom, I’ll only get selfish once I’ve covered Mothers Day)

I’m particularly looking forward to checking out Poodlebreath (ceramic artist Melissa Pavlovic makes hauntingly beautiful and slightly creepy pendants that I’m completely besotted with), and, as always, I’m excited to see what Adea Chung of Billy Would has up her sleeve. Her fresh and simple jewelry made from reclaimed wood is a personal favourite. I also plan to swing by Tiny Warbler, The Beautiful Project and Track and Field. I know from past Got Craft shows that I’m guaranteed to see some standout items on their tables, and this time, as we’ve already established, I plan to treat myself to those items (hello new laptop case).

Not every one of the 50 vendors at Sunday’s show have been at Got Craft before. Some of the new kids on the dock include Plantscapes (Terrariums and planters made from thrift store glassware and ceramics) and Amis de Montagne (the cutest – and this is coming from a girl that wouldn’t characterize herself as a ‘doll person’ – cutest little yeti-like dolls the world has ever seen. Regular readers will recognize these fuzzy little creatures from last week’s Scout List banner in the top carousel).

By the way, the first 30 people through the door receive a FREE, handmade swag bag stuffed full of goodies from all the vendors, so make sure you arrive early!

May 3rd | 11am – 5pm | Royal Canadian Legion| $2 (kids are free)

Michelle Sproule grew up in Kitsilano and attended Bond University in Australia and the University of Victoria before receiving her graduate degree in Library Sciences from The University of Toronto. She lives by the beach in Vancouver and enjoys wandering aimlessly through the city’s shops and streets with her best friend – a beat up, sticky, grimy, and uncooperative camera.
