About Bandidas Taqueria

Known for its killer brunch menu, hefty burritos, house-made drinks, and heaping plates of cheesy nachos, Bandidas Taqueria has been a staple of Commercial Drive since 2009. The beloved East Van restaurant is the creation of Jackie-Rae Avery and Aiyana Kane, two former school teachers hailing from Northern B.C. and Northern California, respectively. They left their teaching careers in pursuit of making perfect vegetarian tacos, creating a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, and growing a business that could become a pillar of support in their community.

With the help of a group of incredibly supportive (and handy) friends and family, the two renovated the restaurant, and opened the doors in January 2009. Their business has grown steadily since, eventually doubling in size in 2016, with the launch of a food truck in 2017 (the daily whereabouts of which can be tracked here).

The continued success of the business has enabled the restaurant to sponsor hundreds of local events, host shows for local artists and musicians, engage in environmentally and socially responsible business practices, and provide medical benefits and extensive leadership training for their staff. A few times a year, Bandidas hosts major fundraisers for International Women’s Day, Earth Day, and National Indigenous Peoples Day, donating 100% of profits from each day’s sales in support of human rights and environmental protection.

The menu boasts vegetarian and vegan versions of Mexican favourites, and has extensive gluten-free options as well. The portions are hearty and everything is made from scratch from quality ingredients — the limes for the margaritas are squeezed daily, and the tortillas are pressed to order. Omnivores, vegetarians, and people with almost any dietary restriction will find deeply satisfying fare within the art-covered walls of this East Vancouver institution.
