Stonestreet Winery: Defying the Limits of California Winegrowing

The GOODS from Stonestreet ESTATE VINEYARDS

Alexander Valley, CA | Towering above the floor of the Alexander Valley sits the vast 5,500-acre Stonestreet Mountain Estate. For decades, pioneers, settlers, and ranchers have been drawn to this land for opportunities ranging from raising cattle to bottling spring water. Today, the mountain, which sits just north of San Francisco and neighbors Napa, is planted with nearly 750 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Stonestreet produces wines that reflect the original, untamed nature of land – wines with restrained power and transcendent finesse.

Stonestreet Mountain Estate was established by the late Jess Jackson in 1995. His vision: defy the limits of California winegrowing. Stonestreet Mountain Estate stands as a testament to the unwavering perseverance that Jess knew would take generations to understand. As the second generation, Jess Jackson’s son Christopher and wife Ariel Jackson, are committed to the continued growth and honing of Jess’ vision. Together with Winemaker Lisa Valtenbergs, their focus is creating world class, high-elevation wines while remaining stewards of the land.

Mountain vineyards are notoriously difficult to farm, and Stonestreet Estate is no exception. With vineyards ranging between 400 – 2,400ft. in elevation, the Estate boasts over 20 different soil types and many microclimates. No two vineyards are the same allowing each to demonstrate their unique sense of place on the Estate.

“The mountain always leads, and we follow,” said Lisa. “Our vineyard and winemaking teams adjust daily, if not hourly, to the changing conditions on the mountain to achieve the best possible reward – iconic wines from a place unlike any other.”

Valtenbergs, who joined the estate team in 2008, considers winegrowing in the vineyard as important as winemaking in the cellar. “For our Cabernet Sauvignons, we attribute the wines signature powerful structure, balanced acidity, and concentrated flavors to the mountainous demanding conditions,” said Lisa. “For our Chardonnays, the wide range of growing conditions translates to elegant and balanced wines with complex flavors and textures. I love creating wines that have a real sense of place.”

About Stonestreet | Founded in 1995 by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke of Jackson Family wines. Stonestreet Estate Vineyards stands as one of the most extensive mountain estates in the world and is a testament to the quality of high-elevation winegrowing in California. Originating from high above Alexander Valley, spanning elevations between 400ft-2,400ft, one finds a collection of distinctive single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs—wines carved from the extreme landscape. From these divergent terroirs, winemaker Lisa Valtenbergs crafts site-specific single vineyard wines each harvest. Additionally, the Stonestreet portfolio showcases an Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Chardonnay and Estate Sauvignon Blanc—a collection of expressive cuvees emanating from the most highly prized vineyard blocks on the mountain during a given vintage.
