(via) It’s been 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall so we’d be forgiven for forgetting about the East/West division of Germany and how much courage it must have taken to will oneself to escape. All my life I thought East Berliners just needed to get over two walls (and across the so-called “death strip” between them) in order to reach West Berlin (no big deal), but this riveting film – taken by a tourist who was in the right place at the right time – shows that swimming across the Spree River was another option. That might sound like a straightforward proposition, but it looks like harrowing stuff!
