We Want a Copy of Devon Fredericksen’s New Book, ‘How to Camp in the Woods’

We’re a pretty satisfied bunch, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t covetous. Sometimes we see things out there that we just must have. Cool Things We Want is an archive of those earthly desires.

If you follow Scout on Instagram you know we do a lot of camping year round and in all kinds of weather. Though we have our systems, methods and supplies pretty well figured out, we love books that teach us a thing or three. Case in point: Devon Fredericksen’s comprehensive How to Camp in the Woods.

The “complete guide to finding, outfitting, and enjoying your adventure in the great outdoors” has information on everything from survival basics and wilderness etiquette to first aid essentials and how to properly employ a compass and map, making it well worth the extra weight in your backpack.

I took a copy into the wilds a week ago and found it very useful and informative. It won’t show you silly and extraneous stuff like how to start a fire with a skateboard and a pair of Vans (this one has won me a bet or two) but it will detail several other methods and fire-starting styles, not to mention cooking tips, knot guidance, and the ever-important principles of “leave no trace” adventuring.
