The Small Garage That Converts Finicky Classic Vehicles Into Reliable Electric Heroes

We’re a pretty satisfied bunch, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t covetous. Sometimes we see things out there that we just must have. Cool Things We Want is an archive of those earthly desires.

(via) We have an old VW van that we love more than anything that doesn’t live and breathe. There are three major downsides to it, however: it’s slow, mechanically unreliable and the gas mileage sucks. If it was within our means we would swap out its 2.3L engine for a powerful electric one via EV West, a company in Southern California that has done the same to old Ferraris, Porsches and yes, even VW vans.

EV West, a garage outside San Diego, is turning classic cars into electric vehicles. Not only that, their cars have won performance competitions and even set a record at the PIke’s Peak International Hill Climb. We talk with owner Michael Bream about how he got started doing DIY conversions and the technology that makes these conversions possible. We also check out some very cool cars.

According to the short Freethink film above, the only trouble is the wait list is over three years…
