Northafourth

Welcome to the Vancouver Lexicon. Its purpose is to pin down the patois of the City of Vancouver by recording its toponyms, nicknames, slang terms, personalities, places, and other Van-centric things. Full A-Z here.

Northafourth | sub-neighbourhood, brag | A toponymic portmanteau that denotes the supposed superiority of the part of Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood located north of 4th Avenue. According to many who live on the beach-facing downslope north of 4th between Macdonald and Burrard, they reside in the real Kits. This same estimation sees the world south of 4th Avenue being something entirely different, even lesser in spirit, circumstance and value. To these same people, 5th Avenue might as well be the moon. It’s a west side thing, particularly among especially possessive long term residents and real estate fetishists.

Usage: “No dude. 16th and Blenheim isn’t Kitsilano. That’s like the diaper of Dunbar. You gotta be northafourth…”
