Takashi Murakami-Inspired Tasting Menu Debuts at Market by Jean-Georges

The GOODS from Market by Jean-Georges

Vancouver, BC | As the Vancouver Art Gallery prepares to unveil its spring exhibition, Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg (February 3 – May 6, 2018), Market by Jean-Georges is preparing to present a five-course tasting menu inspired by Murakami’s work.

The exhibition is the first ever major retrospective of Takashi Murakami’s work in Canada. Featuring over 55 impressive paintings and sculptures, Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg offers an in-depth survey of the evolution of Murakami’s paintings from the 1980s to the present, while highlighting the artist’s role as a committed and often conflicted cultural commentator. To celebrate the launch of this monumental exhibition, the Murakami-Inspired Tasting Menu will be available daily from February 5 to 28, 2018.

“In conceptualizing this menu, careful consideration was given to colour and texture. We wanted to ensure that presentation took precedence so guests could see the visual connection to Murakami’s signature style,” said executive chef Ken Nakano. “Murakami’s work is ambitious and intricate, filled with boundless imagination, bold colours, and a dedication to exquisite craftsmanship, not unlike the culinary world. We wanted to create a bridge between his stunning artwork and the plate, and hope guests enjoy our flavour interpretations of his artwork.”

One of the standout dishes on this tasting menu is inspired by the title of the exhibition, The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg. The Roasted Beet Risotto with Charred Octopus and Nori Tenkasu has an earthy foundation and an umami that provides depth to the charred octopus, while the nori tenkasu adds texture. Other dishes include a Grilled Wagyu Flat Iron Steak, with Celeriac and Tamari Demi-Glace and Perigord Black Truffle, inspired by the artist’s Ens? series. To finish, the Flower Ball is a Floral Panna Cotta with Wild Rose Crumble and Basil. To pair with the dessert, guests are encouraged to try the Sunflower Sour, a gin-based cocktail that incorporates a house made sunflower orgeat, infused with saffron and yuzu. Both the dessert and the cocktail are inspired by Murakami’s signature animated flowers.

The Murakami-Inspired Tasting Menu will be offered daily from 5 February to 28 February 2018, for CAD $120 per person. For those that wish to visit the exhibition first-hand, guests can choose to add advanced tickets to Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg to their dinner package.
