BEST PICTURE SERIES: HELL OR HIGH WATER
August 1 | 7pm | Whistler Public Library
In this film, two brothers come together to rob the banks that are foreclosing on their family land. The hold-ups are part of a last-ditch scheme to take back a future that was stolen from under their feet. Vengeance seems to be theirs until they find themselves in the crosshairs of a relentless Texas Ranger.

WHISTLER MUSEUM'S ANNUAL LEGO BUILDING COMPETITION

The Whistler Museum will be hosting its 21st annual LEGO Building Competition! It is open for children under 15 and there will be many great prizes to be won! Children are given a set amount of time to create something following a given theme. After the time is up our judges will choose the top three children from each age group to win special prizes.

Day 1 with Nina Moore: Ancient, intricate, organic, and long lasting, yet temporary body art. Learn how to mix your own paste, roll a henna cone, create a successful henna design, and how to apply it. Day 2 with Hazel Eason: Learn the elements of traditional whole-herb incense-making from gathering ingredients to burning methods. Touch on the basics of scent-mixing and play with the world of herbs and their amazing natural properties.

The Canadian landscape has been immortalized by many great artists including the infamous Group of Seven and the magnificent Emily Carr. Learn how to create colourful, vibrant landscapes and develop your personal style. This workshop will focus on the basic elements and techniques needed to paint the natural environment. Through a combination of demonstrations, critique, and one to one collaboration students will improve their skills and learn to create incredible Canadian landscape paintings.

Join long-time locals on the Whistler Museum’s Valley of Dreams Walking Tour as they lead you through Whistler Village and uncover the pioneer history of the region, tales behind the development of the mountains and Whistler’ own stories of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Stops include Village Square and Olympic Plaza, sit of the medal ceremonies in February 2010. Tours begin at the Whistler Visitor Centre.

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT – CAMERON BIRD & VANCE THEORET
On now – August 6 | Adele Campbell Fine Art Gallery
Enjoy our Summer Spotlight exhibition of Cameron Bird’s vibrant and classically Canadian impressionist paintings, and Vance Theoret’s adorable soapstone and bronze animal sculptures. In the wake of the recent forest fires in Cameron and Vance’s home town of 100 Mile House, BC, the artists have each donated a painting or sculpture as a prize for a silent auction. All proceeds will go to the Canadian Red Cross, who are supporting the province of British Columbia in providing immediate relief and long-term recovery to those affected by the wildfires.

UMBILICUS: LIFE FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Umbilicus: Life from the Inside Out is a show of fine felted sculptures, paintings, and images of babies, fetuses, eggs, wombs, pelvises, and umbilicals exploring birth, death, and life from the inside out.

LINES AND SHAPES
On now – August 16 | The Gallery at the Arts Centre
What do you feel when you see a circle, a square, a triangle? Are you affected the same way upon seeing an object with curves as you are by an object with sharp edges?  Lines, shapes have an endless variety of characteristics, each communicating different messages to the audience. Lines and shapes both have an array of meanings and help artists to build their “Visual grammar” or language.  Artists participating in the Lines and Shapes exhibition were given free range to explore the theme in any format, medium and subject matter.

EDWARD BURTYNSKY: THE SCARRED EARTH
On now – October 16 | Audain Art Museum
Edward Burtynsky, as a documentary photographer, has chronicled, over the past three decades, humanity’s influence over the Earth’s surface. Scarred Landscapes is an intimate look at how we, as a species, have altered our physical landscape through resource extraction.

SQUANDERER MURAL FESTIVAL

In August and September of 2017, a group of juried artists and students will be tasked with painting large public murals in Squamish.
