The GOODS from Ocean Wise

Vancouver, BC | Fin to Tail, a cooking class-style event at Vancouver Aquarium, is back for a second year on Thursday, Aug. 3 and features a new lineup of some of the city’s hottest chefs. This seafood-focused event, which will include several cooking demonstrations and tastings, will feature Chef Quang Dang of West Restaurant, Chef Andrea Carlson of Burdock & Co., Chef Shelomme Bouvette of Chicha along with Karen Dar Woon of Your Secret Chef, as well as the Aquarium’s own Ocean Wise Executive Chef Ned Bell. Guests can also sharpen up their knife know-how with a live demonstration from Knifewear’s Mike Wrinch.

“Last year’s inaugural event was a hit, so we’ve brought back Fin to Tail for a second year to satiate the appetite that local foodies have to hone their home cooking skills,” said Bell. “There’s no better way than this to spend a summer evening outside with friends and fellow seafood lovers. It’s an opportunity to learn about the ocean-friendly choices we can all make, and to learn firsthand that sustainable truly does taste better.”

A one-of-a-kind culinary event, Fin to Tail is taking place Thursday, Aug. 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. All demonstrations and tastings will feature seafood provided by the local FISH (Fresh Ideas Start Here) Market and will take place in the Aquarium’s spacious outdoor Ocean Courtyard.

Guests will have an opportunity to explore the galleries partway through the evening, with a glass of wine or beer in hand. Black Hills Estate Winery will be pouring a crisp white blend throughout the night, while refreshing beer, courtesy of Red Truck Beer Company, will keep brew lovers happy.

Guests will get an intimate look into how these top local chefs and Ocean Wise seafood partners prepare their favourite sustainable seafood dishes, with quick and easy recipes that take 10 minutes or less. Following each demo, guests will get to taste each enticing creation; at the end of the night, they can take away recipe cards so they can make the delicious dishes in their own kitchens.

Tickets cost $90 and include food and alcohol; they can be purchased at www.vanaqua.org/fintotail.

Please note that this is a 19+ plus event. Proceeds from this event directly support Vancouver Aquarium’s ocean conservation programs.

Overfishing is the biggest threat facing our oceans today. The Ocean Wise symbol next to a menu or seafood item is the Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly seafood choice. Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program makes it easy for consumers to make sustainable seafood choices that ensure the health of our oceans for generations to come.

The Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers to ensure they have the most current scientific information regarding sustainable seafood and to help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. The options are highlighted on their menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, making it easier for consumers to make ocean-friendly seafood choices.

In addition to its website, Ocean Wise also makes available an iPhone application—an easy-to-use app that provides consumers with Ocean Wise restaurants, markets and supplier venues from coast to coast, and a comprehensive list of ocean-friendly seafood options.
