Angus An & Kurtis Kolt To Host Pop-Up Sherry Bar At ‘Fat Mao’ — November 12-13

The GOODS from Fat Mao

Vancouver, BC | In celebration of International Sherry Week, Fat Mao Noodles will temporarily transform into Gato Gordo, a two-night pop-up bar featuring six Sherries selected by wine expert Kurtis Kolt. Gato Gordo — Spanish for fat cat — is one of over 1000 events planned around the world for Sherry Week. The Chinatown pop-up bar will highlight a wide range of Sherry flavour profiles and styles that will be paired with Thai-style snacks from Chef Angus An.

“I’m a big proponent of Sherry, whether a chilled, citrusy, dry Fino Sherry that’s perfect with seafood, to richer, more concentrated Oloroso styles which tend to be nutty and have warm lashings of butterscotch and toffee—perfect with stews and curries,” says Kurtis. “With Gato Gordo I want to illustrate how enjoyable and food-friendly Sherry can be, and to dispel any myths about it always being sweet.”

Single glasses of Sherry start at $5, while flights of three begin at $15. Featured Sherries will range from a Hidalgo Manzanilla La Gitana with flavours of sea air, muddled lemon and chamomile, to El Maestro Sierra Oloroso with tastes of dark fruit and cardamom, to Lustau East India Solera with notes of stewed figs, dates, and cloves. Kurtis will happily make Sherry pairing recommendations to mix and match with Fat Mao’s tapas.

Gato Gordo’s tapas roster will feature four of Fat Mao’s regular menu items, and four new dishes only available during the pop-up. Staple snacks will include: Ceviche of Tuna and Mussels; Fried Egg Salad; Beef Laksa; and Confit Duck Wrap. Special Gato Gordo exclusives will be: Clam and Leek Chawanmushi; Steamed Oysters with Black Bean Vinaigrette; Crispy Garlic Prawns; and Sweet Potatoes and Chinese Sausage, seasoned with curry and house-made XO sauce.

Gato Gordo is the latest collaboration between wine expert Kurtis Kolt and Chef Angus An. Kurtis is a wine writer and consultant, speaker, and sommelier who regularly consults on the wine list at Chef Angus’s flagship restaurant Maenam. The two have also previously partnered on other projects, including a notable service at New York’s legendary James Beard House.

Gato Gordo will run November 12th and 13th at Fat Mao in Chinatown. No reservations or tickets are required. Guests will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.

About Fat Mao

FatMao_HongStudioPhotography_Food5_

Meaning “Prosperous Cat” in Cantonese, Fat Mao is one of award-winning Chef Angus An’s four successful restaurants. The first to open was Thai-inspired Maenam, followed by Longtail Kitchen, where An serves casual street food. Then in 2016 Chef Angus welcomed both Freebird Chicken Shack and Fat Mao Noodles. A casual 25-seater in Chinatown, Fat Mao serves lunch and dinner seven days a week from 11:30am-9pm. Noodles and sides at Fat Mao are inspired by Chef Angus’s travels in Thailand, and are given the stamp of authenticity by his Thai wife, Kate. Noodles are made fresh daily, and dishes are priced at $12 and under, with a variety of share plates for $10 and under. Refresh with Thai or local beer and cider, or pair a meal with a cocktail, Thai-style iced tea and coffee. Take advantage of the After Work Special from 4pm-7pm and enjoy noodles with a beer for only $14.99
